Montrose 1 Airdrieonians 0

MONTROSE recorded a narrow win over Airdrieonians to give themselves a slight advantage at the halfway point in the promotion play-off semi-final.

The sides were meeting at Links Park for the second time in less than a month, and both were keen to take control of the tie from the start.

Montrose could have taken the lead in the fourth minute when Michael Gardyne whipped a free kick into the box from wide on the right, but neither Sean Dillon nor Craig Johnston could meet the ball to steer it into the net.

But Johnston made amends four minutes later when he capitalised on a piece of disastrous defending from Airdrie’s Brody Paterson. The defender, looking to hook the ball to safety in his own box, instead lobbed it over his own goalkeeper, Max Currie. As the ball dropped towards the goal, CRAIG JOHNSTON raced in to blast into the net from barely a yard out.

Dillon came close to doubling the lead two minutes later, glancing a header towards goal from a Gardyne corner, but Callum Fordyce was in the right place at the right time to boot the ball off the line.

Montrose were buoyed by the number of chances they created, and with a large crowd at their back, surged forwards in search of a second goal. Terry Masson blasted over from the edge of the box, while at the other end, newly-crowned PFA League One Player of the Season Dylan Easton mishit a shot that rolled wide of the post.

Lyall Cameron almost scored in spectacular fashion in the 34th minute, running through the middle of the park before firing a 25-yard shot wide of the post.

Great play from Airdrie involving quick crossfield passing went unrewarded in the 35th minute when Allan Fleming held Gabby McGill’s weak shot. A minute later, Calum Gallagher headed against the post, the ball dropping wide for a goal kick.

Scott Agnew was inches away from equalising in the 38th minute when his left foot shot from the edge of the box travelled through a crowd of players and narrowly wide of the post.

The final chance of the first half was created by Montrose, Graham Webster surging down the right before sending the ball inside to Lyall, the young midfielder having a left foot shot palmed into the air and held at the second attempt by Currie.

Airdrie started the second half on the front foot, Gallagher beating Andrew Steeves but shooting wide inside the box. A minute later, Gardyne sent a low shot across the Airdrie six yard box, but it rolled wide of the post.

Johnston came close to scoring his second of the night when he was denied by a diving save from Currie with a shot from wide on the right.

Airdrie continued to press forward in search of an equaliser, Easton sidefooting wide from the edge of the box and Gallagher slamming a shot into the side netting.

The final chance of note fell to Mark Whatley, the Montrose midfielder shooting high and wide from 30 yards out.
