Montrose 2 Queen's Park 1

This was something of an unusual game with both Montrose and Queen’s Park having already qualified for the play-offs and no hope of winning the league title. So what would both managers do to give players pitch time, but not get suspended or injured before the play-off games. The answer was to unfold very quickly because after only a minute the Spiders opened the scoring to make it 1-0. A cut in from the left by CONNOR SMITH saw him curl a shot in off the inside far post wind assisted – it was game on straight away then.

Montrose made changes to the squad for reasons as above with Lennox back in goal, Cammy B at left back, Steeves alongside Dillon and Webster at right back. Whatley was rested, Cameron, Cammy F and Masson occupied midfield with Gardyne, Johnston and Lyons up front. Subs used were Watson, Callaghan (great to see him back), Ross Campbell, Milne and Whatley.

Queen’s used the strong easterly wind to good effect in the first half and although Montrose got more into the game as the half wore on, it was the Spiders who looked the greater threat but with only a single goal lead at the break it did not prove to be enough with a master class of defending by Sean Dillon preventing any further damage to the half-time scoreline.

The second half was a lot different. Montrose were on top searching for an equalising goal but at the same time had to prevent disaster at the other end where Dillon was at his best and Lennox mopped up anything else which came his way. Time was ticking by however and Mo fans were becoming anxious about the lack of a finishing touch to provide the equalising goal. That was solved on 78 minutes courtesy of a free kick wide left by Gardyne which ended up high in the top right-hand corner of the net via the unfortunate head of defender MICHAEL DOYLE for an own goal, wind assisted.

Ten minutes to go after all the celebrations following the goal, but could the Mo continue the pressure and get a winner? Queen’s Park to their credit also tried for a deciding goal but ultimately it was the momentum and with the wind behind them which gave the edge to Montrose. On 81 minutes SEÁN DILLON capped of a match winning performance to latch on to a loose ball in a packed defence following a corner by the Mo and he hooked his shot in from 15 yards through a multitude of bodies to make it 2-1

Hopefully no injuries to either side although Cameron for the Mo and Quitongo and Doyle saw yellow cards.

The last few minutes plus stoppage time were a bit frantic which gave no thought of early easing back by either team which might have been a starting point, but Montrose just about deserved the win on the day. Queen’s Park will be a threat to their opponents in the play-off games however and are not to be underestimated – and the same goes for Montrose.
