Montrose 2 Airdrieonians 2

Promotion rivals Montrose and Airdrieonians shared the points from an entertaining match at Links Park.

With both sides having secured promotion play-off spots with four games still to play, the teams were looking to maintain momentum during the run-in, with Airdrie still potentially able to usurp Cove Rangers at the top of the table.

But it was Montrose who started the match in top gear, and the home side took the lead in less than two minutes, BLAIR LYONS heading in from Michael Gardyne’s corner.

Airdrie looked for an immediate response, pressing forward in numbers. Montrose goalkeeper Allan Fleming was called into action in the 6th minute, punching a Scott McGill shot over the crossbar. Gabriel McGill also came close seven minutes later, heading over from a corner.

Fleming kept Airdrie at bay again in the 22nd minute, tipping Adam Frizzell’s shot from the edge of the box over the crossbar. But he was unable to prevent CALLUM SMITH from equalising three minutes later, the forward heading in from six yards following a free kick.

Montrose looked for an immediate response, Gardyne shooting at Max Currie from 25 yards out and Craig Johnston hitting the post with a header from a Lyons cross. At the other end, Fleming blocked a shot from Scott McGill.

The final chance of the first half fell to Cammy F Ballantyne, whose shot was deflected wide for a corner.

The opening 20 minutes of the second half were comparatively quiet, with few clear-cut chances created.

Montrose restored their advantage in the 68th minute when a Lewis Milne free kick into the box ricocheted into the path of BLAIR LYONS, who slammed it low into Currie’s net for his second goal.

It took only five minutes for Airdrie to restore parity, CALUM GALLAGHER heading in from six yards from a cross from wide on the left.

The visitors were handed a gilt-edged opportunity to take the lead a minute later after Gardyne handled the ball in the box. Dylan Easton stepped up to take the penalty, but chipped the ball over the crossbar.

Both sides continued to create chances, Smith lobbing Fleming only to see the ball drop wide of the post, and Lyons shooting high and wide of the Airdrie goal from the edge of the box.

Montrose captain Paul Watson, introduced as a late substitute, had a 20-yard shot pushed out by Currie with six minutes to go, and Easton hit Fleming’s crossbar with a 25-yard shot a minute later. The final chance fell to Gardyne in stoppage time, but he turned and shot over the crossbar.
