Dumbarton 0 Montrose 0

Montrose made several changes again and started with Fleming in goal then Whatley, Allan, Dillon and Steeves with a midfield of Cammy F, Watson and Masson. Up front were Milne, Gardyne with Cameron down the centre. It was an unfamiliar line-up but there was support if required from the bench with Quinn, Lyons, Johnston, Simpson, Lennox and Ross Campbell. Referee was Colin Steven.

The pitch was very dry and uneven, and it did not take long to see that neither side were going to give anything away. Montrose had the bulk of possession but long balls failed to end up with a blue shirt on the end as the Dumbarton defence gobbled up most and the rest went out of play. Watson tried from 30 yards but too high, Dillon headed wide from a corner and a Cammy F jink down the left ended with the ball in the keeper’s hands.

As the half wore on Dumbarton had a decent spell of possession but had no end product and Montrose had three successive corners all which were easily dealt with by Dumbarton and the last piece of action before the break was a Masson shot just wide. Half-time at 0-0 and still all to do by both sides.

No doubt both dressing room messages were along the lines of ‘must do better’ or similar and that provided a bit of angst with a bit of ill feeling which referee Colin Steven had to sort out several times until finally using the coloured cards in his pocket. Gardyne was felled in the 46th minute by a very hard tackle and received lengthy treatment but no card was produced and the free kick was headed away for a fruitless corner. Ross Campbell was yellow carded as the angst on the pitch looked to be heading in the wrong direction and indeed it was. A big melee in the Montrose 6-yard box ended with a hard tackle on Matty Allan and after another long bit of treatment he was replaced and it did not look good as he was helped from the pitch. He was replaced by Craig Johnston to give more pace and energy up front and Steeves came inside to play alongside Dillon.

On the hour mark Gardyne shot too high and then another yellow card for Montrose as Dillon tangled with Oyinsan, after the two had already exchanged opinions previously. A yellow card was shown at the Dumbarton bench and Dillon became a target for the Dumbarton crowd so had to tread carefully. Watson was replaced by Lyons as Dumbarton upped the pressure sensing that Montrose were a bit disjoined at the time but Steeves dealt with a through ball when he was alone with three Sons players around him. The next yellow card went to Paton for a foul on Cameron and Montrose made a second change with Cammy F being replaced by Simpson who himself was not on the pitch very long.

Then the best, and only chances worth noting in the entire game, as Dumbarton missed a sitter right in front of goal when a low cross was sliced wide by them when it was easier to score! Then the best Montrose chance was when Blair Lyons jinked his way into the box to be upended and a penalty was awarded. With usual taker Webster sitting in the stand, Gardyne took the kick, but keeper Wright saved it and the golden game winning chance had gone.

Into the last few minutes and Carswell of Dumbarton was yellow carded for hitting young Cameron if full flight. MacLean was replaced by Stokes in stoppage time and the last piece of action saw Elijah Simpson straight red carded for a late challenge.

From a Montrose point of view, it ended a forgettable game but brings the play-offs one point closer, when hopefully Manager Stewart Petrie will have a full-strength squad to select from.
