Queen's Park - Montrose -

Montrose brought Webster and Whatley to the starting eleven in place of Lyons and Milne as Manager Stewart Petrie shuffled his squad to suit the opposition on the day and with every reason to think that the Firhill playing surface was not going to be good – and it wasn’t particularly on a cool windy day when mistakes were very likely to be punished.

When referee Euan Anderson started the game the first piece of action saw Queen’s Park caught offside and for Montrose it was the first corner which was headed away by the Queen’s defence. In the next attack Cammy B slotted it to Webster whose cross almost made it to Simpson but a defender got there first and deflected it for a corner from which Masson fired it high from 30 yards.

The Spiders looked sharp up to a point but they lacked any great threat up front to trouble a solid looking Montrose defence. Dillon and Quinn mopped up everything which came their way and Quinn looked to go forward at every opportunity with a couple of headers just wide. Up to the 20-minute mark the game was poised about 50/50 with the midfield of Montrose holding firm with Whatley particularly in the thick of the action.

A free kick by Gardyne after a foul on Simpson found Webster but keeper Ferrie saved for the Spiders. A blow for the home side after 29 minutes when defender Kilday was injured and replaced by Grant as Montrose got more in control going up to the interval. Gardyne was yellow carded for a late tackle and several Mo corners came and went and when we thought they were all going to be wasted up stepped AIDAN QUINN to thump one in from 15 yards central to put Montrose 1-0 up on 44 minutes and on the balance of play at that point it was a deserved lead.

Queen’s Park made a change to start the second-half with McBride replacing Darcy as the Spiders started on the front foot but the solid Mo defence still coped with everything as the clock moved on to the 60-minute mark. Eli Simpson was injured in a tackle and replaced by Craig Johnston. Lennox was alert to save a drilled shot by Robson without too much trouble then Queen’s made another change with Quitongo on for Longridge up front.

Lennox coped with another shot this time from Smith and Gardyne was felled by a poor tackle but strangely no yellow card for the offending player, a point which Gardyne pointed out to the referee after he himself was carded earlier in the game. Shortly afterwards Masson was replaced by Lewis Milne then Michael Gardyne was replaced by Matty Allan with the clock ticking with 5 minutes to go.

The Spiders tried all they could - a free kick wide right curled just wide then a Quitongo shot was pushed away for a corner by Lennox and cleared easily downfield where the ball stayed until the 5 minutes stoppage time were ended with a 1-0 win which got Montrose back to winning ways.

This was more the Montrose side we the fans are used to with a solid performance using what strengths we have in the squad and perfectly timed changes during the game. Several candidates for Man of the Match but today it goes to Mark Whatley for an outstanding contribution in midfield. Carry that on next week and we’ll all be happy with that.
