Airdrieonians 4 Montrose 1

Montrose made two changes with Matty Allan and Lewis Milne coming in for Aidan Quinn and Michael Gardyne who were unavailable. Against an inform Airdrie side there are no complaints as they scored more goals and its that that counts even though Montrose had enough possession and far more corners. The only complaint was maybe about some of the refereeing decisions particularly the yellow cards which were all against Montrose but nothing should be taken from the result which Airdrie fully deserved.

The game took a while to open up with both sides moving freely but Airdrie had the edge in midfield and the big defenders looked like winning everything in the air. Montrose played down the flanks and won corners in the 8th, 9th and 12th minutes but all were gobbled up by the big Airdrie defenders and Montrose failed to capitalise on each second ball by pulling the trigger from range. Dillon and an Airdrie player went for the same high ball but Dillon was yellow carded.

As the first half looked to be heading for stalemate suddenly CALLUM GALLAGHER found himself with the ball at his feet after the Mo defence failed to clear their lines and he hit a beauty into the top corner to give Airdrie a 1-0 lead. The home crowd had barely sat down when that became 2-0 in the 36th minute with a ‘freak’ goal from CALUM GALLAGHER with his back to goal and his lob somehow found its way into the net from the underside of the crossbar. Rocked by those two minutes Montrose upped the pressure and on the stroke of half-time brought it back to 2-1 from the penalty spot. Blair Lyons raced his way into the box and GRAHAM WEBSTER does what he does but even that was disapproved of by the referee who promptly yellow carded Webby for wresting the ball out of the net via the keeper to save time and take to the centre circle to quickly recommence the game.

Airdrie made a change to start the second half with Watson on for MacDonald and Montrose had a lot of pressure but despite winning several corners and free kicks the big defence was not troubled and neither were the second balls by pulling the trigger as they were played sideways of backwards. Airdrie were also playing fast and long particularly down the right and the third goal came against the run of play as a centre was pulled back for the onrushing CRAIG WATSON to hammer a great shot from 20 yards high into the net on 63 minutes. For Montrose Simpson replaced Masson on 69 minutes but immediately Airdrie scored again from another raid down the right with the cross headed in at the second attempt by little ADAM FRIZZELL.

Lewis Milne became the third Montrose player to be yellow carded and it looked harsh as several Montrose players looked to complain about several previous decisions but to no avail. On 75 minutes on for Montrose came Whatley and Brown for Johnston and Milne as another two Montrose corners were won and easily cleared by Airdrie. Another three subs on were made one by Airdrie with Afolabi on for Gallagher and two for the Mo with Webster and Cammy F off for Ross Campbell and a debutant for Tristan Baxter who looked very sharp out on the right wing and looked positive on the ball.

The final 10 minutes were played out without anything more damaging for Montrose although shots by Brown and Steeves were worth a shout at the other end as the final two minutes were taken up by Airdrie making three more substitutions and the referee catching up with Cammy B to show him a yellow card in stoppage time.
Montrose played in their usual style which against most opponents would have been good enough, but not against a good Airdrie side on the day.
