Montrose 1 Falkirk 2
MONTROSE overcame Storm Malik and full-time Falkirk to further cement their place in the promotion play-off positions.
Playing into the strong winter wind in the first half, Montrose weathered both the elements and sustained Falkirk pressure early on.
Aidan Nesbitt could have put the Bairns ahead as early as the fourth minute when Cammy Ballantyne failed to connect with a headed clearance, but the former Celtic youth player could only head wide of the target.
Nesbitt called Allan Fleming into action in the seventh minute, the Montrose goalkeeper reacting well to parry and hold Nesbitt’s shot from the corner of the box.
Montrose’s first chance of the match came through Blair Lyons, the forward dribbling through the Falkirk defence, but his shot was held by Robbie Mutch.
An exquisite Montrose move failed to pay dividends in the 21st minute, Michael Gardyne threading the ball through to Graham Webster, whose square ball to Lyons was intercepted at the last second by former Montrose defender Aaron Taylor-Sinclair.
Nesbitt came close again in the 29th minute, but his show from 30 yards out flew wide. Charlie Telfer also tried his luck a minute later, Fleming palming the ball to safety.
Falkirk took the lead in the 35th minute after Jaze Kabia’s 20-yard shot had been saved by Fleming, the goalkeeper producing a great save at full stretch to send the ball wide for a corner. Telfer swung the ball into the box, the wind assisting it, causing ALLAN FLEMING to misjudge his catch, knocking the ball in at the back post, despite a desperate attempted clearance by Dillon.
The Bairns pushed forward again and could have doubled their lead, but Kabia’s shot from outside the box was blocked.
With five minutes of the first half remaining, Montrose restored parity. BLAIR LYONS cut into the box from the left wing, beat three Falkirk defenders and smashed a shot past the helpless Mutch from 12 yards out.
The momentum in their favour, Montrose surged forward again as the half drew to a close, and their persistence was rewarded a minute into injury time, Webster reaching the bye line and sending the ball to the near post, where CRAIG JOHNSTON was in position to poke the ball into the net.
They could have ended the half two goals clear, but Webster’s free kick curled around the outside of the post.
Both sides continued to create chances in the second half, Cammy Ballatyne bursting into the box on the hour mark but having a low shot blocked and deflected wide.
Webster sent a half volley high and wide in the 71st minute, and Cammy Ballantyne couldn’t apply the finishing touch when Michael Gardyne lobbed the ball into the box a minute later.
Gardyne came close himself twice in the final 10 minutes, shooting wide from 25 yards out in the 81st minute and firing the ball at Mutch in the 88th.
