Clyde 0 Montrose 5

Montrose returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion at Broadwood Stadium by dominating the game virtually throughout. The starting line-up was changed again to a more familiar side for a League 1 game. Lennox in goal then Cammy B, Steeves, Dillon, Waddell, Masson, Webster, Cammy F, Keatings, Milne and Lyons. Subs were Quinn, Watson, Whatley, Brown, Antoniazzi, Johnston and Fleming.

Referee was George Calder who signalled Clyde to kick-off and he was soon to signal them to kick-off twice more in the opening 5 minutes as the Mo opened up a two-goal lead.

After the first attack from Clyde fizzled out the Mo scored with their first attack. Webster was sent away at speed down the right assisted by Cammy B and the cross eventually found LEWIS MILNE who hit a fierce volley which keeper Parry couldn’t prevent from finding the target despite getting a hand to it.

An early 1-0 lead for the Mo soon became a 2-0 lead when in the 5th minute another hard-hit cross by Webster from a similar position resulted in an own goal by the unfortunate CONRAD BALATONI turning it high into his own net.

Webster was a constant threat but Montrose had to remember that Clyde also had a man who could cause danger as well. That man was Goodwillie who is a proven scorer and a loose pass in midfield by Montrose sent him in on Lennox but a combination of Lennox, Dillon and Waddell saved the day when a goal looked likely. It was Goodwillie again who set up the next chance for Clyde as his cross was met full on by Splaine but Lennox was alert and saved at point blank range at the expense of a corner which was easily cleared. A goal back from Clyde at that point would have possibly changed the course of the game but it was really the only period of pressure by Clyde in that first half as Montrose regained control.

Whilst Webby was causing havoc down the right Lyons was edging more into it down the left as together they had the Bully Wee defence in bother several times. Defender Scott Rumsby was yellow carded for crudely stopping Lyons in full flight and from the free kick a cross from the left was met by Masson and narrowly missed the target on 25 minutes. No matter as it happened because Montrose did make it 3-0 a minute later. Again it involved Webster down the right whose cross was touched back across the 6-yard box and finished off by CAMMY F BALLANTYNE whose positional sense was perfect.

Another loose pass in midfield almost let Goodwillie in but the same combination of defenders was on hand to snuff out the danger again. Splaine tried his luck from a 25-yard free kick for Clyde but although a corner resulted from it Montrose cleared easily. On 34 minutes Clyde made their first change as Livingstone was replaced by big Gregory Tade to add more up front. Still it was Montrose who looked more likely to add to the score line and both Webster and Masson went close. Clyde made their second change on 43 minutes as attacker Ally Love replaced Rumsby in another effort to change things for the home side.

Into the second half at three goals up and no changes yet for Montrose. Yet again it was the Mo who were in command and on 47 minutes Webster let fly from 20 yards and the blocked shot landed for Milne to have his well hit effort well saved by keeper Parry. The resultant corner also found Webster whose hard hit cross-cum-shot was a coat of paint away from being another own goal as the Clyde defender was relieved to only concede another corner.

Clyde tried to wrestle control at times with danger man Goodwillie involved in everything they tried but even a free-kick central on the edge of the 18-yard line was squandered to the relief of Dillon & Co. On the hour the third Clyde change brought Cunningham off to be replaced by Jones. Try all they could Clyde could not break through as gaps were there for Montrose to exploit at the other end. Exploit they did in the 66th minute when Milne yet again profited from a Webster charge down the right before squaring it to LEWIS MILNE who hit his shot well past the stranded keeper Parry to make it 4-0 to the Mo.

Cue a change for Montrose, in fact a double change on 68 minutes with Lyons and Masson having both done their jobs well, replaced by Antoniazzi and Whatley. With Lyons out of the action it left Montrose with a lack of pace up top which Manager Petrie soon put right by putting Johnston on for Keatings who had also done his job up front in selfless fashion.

When we might have though the Mo would settle on a four goal cushion, CJ had other ideas now he had entered the fray. Cammy F was inches away from another goal but in the 72nd minute he pulled a great ball back for CRAIG JOHNSTON to hammer an unstoppable shot high into the net to make it 5-0. Clyde seemed helpless to stem the tide as the game entered the last few minutes. Waddell hit a rasping 25 yarder which Parry tipped over for a corner, Milne hit the post with a free kick then a Cammy F flick was just too much of a stretch for CJ to finish it off.

Very little stoppage time was added as Montrose won 5-0 with a terrific team performance in commanding style. Although not on the score-sheet himself Graham Webster was outstanding – and he was not alone in that respect on the day, whilst Aaron Lennox at the other end could be well pleased with his clean sheet.
