Montrose 1 Dumbarton 3

MONTROSE surrendered the top spot in League 1 with a home defeat to Dumbarton.
In a scrappy match frequently halted by fouls and time-wasting, first half goals from Gregor Buchanan and Kalvin Orsi were enough to secure the three points for the Sons, although Graham Webster’s late penalty had given Montrose a glimmer of hope.
Dumbarton opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Callum Wilson curled a free kick towards the back post. GREGOR BUCHANAN was unmarked, and somehow managed to kick the ball off his own face and into Allan Fleming’s net.
The visitors extended their lead 10 minutes later when Ross MacLean turned Matty Allan in the Montrose box and squared the ball, leaving KALVIN ORSI with time and space to apply a low finish.
Montrose’s best chance of the first half came in the 36th minute, Andrew Steeves crossing the ball to the edge of the six yard box, Lewis Milne and visiting goalkeeper Sam Ramsbottom clashing, but referee Lloyd Wilson awarding a free kick to Dumbarton.
The Gable Endies, having introduced substitutes Craig Johnston and Kerr Waddell, started the second half looking to find a quick goal, Terry Masson blasting over the crossbar from inside the box inside the first three minutes.
Webster also tried his luck, curling a shot high and wide from the edge of the box after a Milne knockdown.
At the other end of the park, Buchanan headed at Fleming.
Montrose were denied by the woodwork in the 74th minute, Cammy Ballantyne smashing a shot off the underside of the crossbar from a Johnston cross, with Milne only able to knock the rebound wide of Ramsbottom’s post.
Although Dumbarton seemed willing to waste as much time as possible as they sought to retain their lead, they did threaten occasionally, Carlo Plenatiello shooting wide from outside the box after a quick break.
GRAHAM WEBSTER came close again in the 82nd minute, but his shot inside the box was held by Ramsbottom. But the in-form winger was on the scoresheet a minute later, sending Ramsbottom the wrong way with his penalty after Steeves had been upended in the box by Edin Lynch.
Montrose pressed for an equaliser, and could have restored parity two minutes into stoppage time when a Milne free kick pinballed around the box before ricocheting off Ballantyne and out for a goal kick.
