Falkirk 1 Montrose 2

Just when you think all is lost, this Montrose squad produced a second half display to win a game few would have predicted after conceding a soft goal after only 4 minutes to a Falkirk side who only needed a single point to ensure a play-off place.

Both teams made two changes to their starting line up with Matty Allan and Cammy F in to replace Callaghan and Mochrie. It was a bold decision by Montrose to start with three at the back and two wing backs who were not only in an attacking role but also to peg back Falkirk’s wing play which caused problems last time. Referee was Steven Kirkland.

A quiet start erupted into disaster for Montrose after only 4 minutes as Leitch played a neat ball into the box to CONOR SAMMON who appeared to be offside but was played on by Steeves who was out wide. At 1-0 it was exactly the start the Bairns wanted and it really should have been another for them shortly after when Callumn Morrison found acres of space out right but as he angled towards goal Allan Fleming was equal to it and saved the day.

Montrose were nowhere near their best in the first quarter of the game and the wing back idea was not stemming the Falkirk wing play threat. Odd breaks from Montrose were not producing shots on goal until suddenly they produced two very good chances on the half hour. Cammy F weaved his way forward and slotted it to Webster who helped it on to McLean but the final shot was blocked. In the next move Cammy F was again involved as he clattered his way into the box but his under pressure shot was held by keeper Robbie Mutch. It was a worrying time for Falkirk however and the game plan seemed to change with Montrose now taking more control and making more use of ball possession.

Webster was next to try but his snatched shot went high on 40 minutes but the turning point came soon afterwards with a Montrose equaliser. Webster was again involved in slotting through to CAMMY F BALLANTYNE and the youngster made no mistake from 15 yards as he hit his shot hard and low into the bottom corner to make it 1-1 just before the half-time whistle.

It was Montrose’s 6,000th goal in league football since first joining a league over 100 years ago in 1891.

For the start of the second half Montrose made a tactical change by going four at the back to tighten up and eliminate the Falkirk wing play. Off went Quinn and on came Mochrie to give more impetus going forward to rattle a Falkirk side who suddenly looked much less composed. A raft of yellow cards followed in 3 minutes as firstly Masson fouled Sammon, then Fotheringham did likewise to Milne and Webster mistimed a tackle as well. That led us up to the hour mark as Montrose kept on top. Falkirk needed a goal but their previously neat play resorted more to anxious play and long shots which Fleming fielded comfortably.

Montrose were well in the game now but simply must not make mistakes and give it away. Then the decisive move which ultimately won the game. Cammy F who overall had a great game slotted through perfectly for LEWIS MILNE who hit it past keeper Mutch from 15 yards as the Falkirk defence hesitated. So, 2-1 to Montrose on 62 minutes.

Falkirk made an immediate change with Anton Dowds on for Leitch but Montrose were enjoying the game more now with the tactical change made at half-time. McLean almost snatched a third goal on 65 minutes but Mutch saved again going full length to smother the shot. Same again moments later as Cammy F again found McLean who was again foiled by Mutch.

Another change for the Bairns with Aidan Keena on for Fotheringham on 78 minutes as Fleming cut out a long dangerous probing ball with attackers bearing down on him. Craig Johnston came on for Russell McLean on 81 minutes to run at the stretched Falkirk defence. Steeves saw yellow for a hard tackle then Webster stormed down the right but with men in the middle his cross was deflected for a fruitless corner.

The last action in stoppage time provided amazing drama. Firstly, Falkirk won a free kick on the edge of the Montrose 18-yard line, Rennie came on for Webster to delay things and Ross Campbell also came on before the Falkirk free kick was taken. When it was taken by Sean Kelly it took a deflection off the defending wall and into the net for what looked to be an equalising goal. Referee Kirkland thought otherwise and disallowed the goal as it appeared that a Falkirk player was illegally interfering in the defending wall which is not allowed these days.

So, a very welcome 2-1 win for Montrose who can still yet make the end of season Championship play-offs with only (only!) champions Partick Thistle standing in the way next Tuesday night at Links Park if Falkirk lose their final game. Man of the match today was a close-run thing with Cammy F having a very strong shout but on balance it goes to Allan Fleming who had a faultless game.
