Airdrieonians 1 Montrose 1

Montrose made two changes with Ross Campbell in for Russell Mclean and Terry Masson in for Chris Mochrie and were in their black shirts for what effectively was a must win game for both teams in what is likely to be a very toughly contested last four games to decide both champions and play-off places.

Airdrie played a possession game at first looking to put in long probing balls no doubt hoping for one to break kindly for them. The Montrose defence coped well until the break Airdrie hoped for came in the 9th minute. Aidan Quinn looked to have dealt with a long high ball but slipped as he appeared to take a nudge from KYLE CONNELL who gathered the loose ball and hammered in past Fleming to make it 1-0. It was a soft giveaway goal basically the result of an experienced striker using his guile to good effect.

Montrose now needed two goals to win but they barely created a chance and Fleming was again tested by Connell before another blow took young Cochrane out of the action to be replaced by Matty Allan as Montrose went three at the back with Steeves and Cammy B operating now as wing backs. It was a necessary move by Montrose and it got them very much more into the game. Still however a decent effort on the Airdrie goal evaded them.

On 25 minutes Ross Campbell looked to burst through the middle but as he entered the Airdrie box his under pressure shot did not trouble keeper Currie. As the first half progressed towards the break Montrose had much more possession but Airdrie held out relatively comfortably although a Masson volley from 20 yards central was deflected for a corner luckily for Airdrie. So 1-0 it remained at the interval.

Into the second half with Graham Webster on for Liam Callaghan – Montrose simply had to score but all they created was stopped by an offside flag and a couple of wasted set pieces. The stroke of luck needed simply did not come.

Then the hammer blow came instead as Airdrie increased their lead on 56 minutes. A breakaway down the middle from a long clearance saw them 3 on 1 as Montrose were caught up field. There were Airdrie men in space left and right but KYLE CONNELL opted to go it alone and hammered another 20 yarder past Fleming to make it 2-0

Half an hour to go and Montrose made two more changes. They were missing the holding game of Russell McLean who occupies defenders and creates space for others BUT he was not there tonight. Ross Campbell and Cammy F came off and were replaced by Antoniazzi and Mochrie. The latter two made an instant impact as possession went more Montrose’s way yet they lacked the finishing touch which Airdrie had on the night. Chances were now being created however and you sensed if a Montrose goal came it could lead to another. Masson and Webster almost did it but the final shot went wide.

Airdrie made a change with Stokes on for Gallagher to break up play on 68 minutes and keeper Currie saved the day going full length to push out a shot in what really should have ended in a Montrose goal. 76 minutes gone and Steeves was replaced by Johnston in the most unlikely of substitutions as Montrose threw everything at Airdrie in the last 10 minutes.

The Montrose goal came on 80 minutes as GRAHAM WEBSTER gathered a pass from Masson and hit a screamer into the top corner from 25 yards out. At last Airdrie were under the cosh. Desperate attacking play by Montrose saw Cammy B booked for a bad tackle – he had to do it as a breakaway was on the way again. Then Johnston was felled as he threatened – so a free kick to Montrose but no card this time. Airdrie made more changes as the clock ran down then another few minutes clicked by with an injury to Connell who was replaced by Roy as Montrose waited for play to re-start going into stoppage time.

A third Airdrie goal looked likely as again Montrose pushed forward with Quinn up top now. It was 1 on 1 but as Fleming narrowed the angle Turner shot wide. A yellow card was shown to Dean Ritchie late on as Montrose won a free kick on the edge of the Airdrie 18-yard box. It was exactly the sort of situation defences hate. Antoniazzi swung it in but too long and it sailed agonisingly wide of the far post to the relief of Airdrie as the final whistle sounded with the score at 2-1. Too little too late for Montrose but on the balance of play over the 90 minutes Airdrie will be more pleased with the outcome.

Montrose can feel they have had another good season overall and must look at the next three games as an opportunity to hold their heads high and hope for that bit of fortune which has eluded them too often recently.
