Partick Thistle 5 Montrose 0

If Montrose felt they were taking on a Thistle side in great form, they were certainly right and can have no complaints about the result. Thistle were different class on the night from the very first whistle. Montrose were all in white but Thistle were unusually in dark blue shirts to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of winning Scottish Cup all those years ago.

Referee was Alan Muir. Montrose made two changes with Fleming replacing Lennox and Antoniazzi replacing Mochrie. Good to see Kerr Waddell back in the squad albeit on the bench after an unfortunate injury just at the time he was on top form. For Partick Thistle former Mo players Blair Lyons and Mo Niang were both on the bench and as the game unfolded you could see just why they are finding it hard to pin down starting eleven places.

Montrose had the first attack of the game but the ball from Steeves was just too long for McLean.

For Thistle Brian Graham had the first chance but shot too high when the ball fell kindly for him in the centre of the box on 5 minutes. McLean was brought down crudely for a free kick to Montrose but otherwise the challenge went unpunished and the Milne free kick was gathered by keeper Jamie Sneddon. In the first quarter of the game Montrose were well in the game with possession as Antoniazzi did well to receive a return pass from Masson but failed to beat keeper Sneddon who in clearing the ball following the Montrose corner was blocked by Quinn who saw Yellow for the offence.

Thistle were more precise when they had the ball with Foster and Tiffany very dangerous down the left and it was Foster who brilliantly collected a long ball wide left to get the better of Cammy B all in one touch and put in a great cross for ZAK RUDDEN to score easily from close range to make it 1-0 on 20 minutes. It was simply a very good goal.

As if the threat of Foster down the left was not enough Tiffoney also showed more than League 1 class and it was clear to see why young Blair Lyons is finding it hard to get games. Montrose kept plugging away and Brownlie was yellow carded for felling Webster but were finding it hard to create clear cut chances and a second Thistle goal looked on the cards. It came on 38 minutes and again it was on form ZAK RUDDEN who took a pass from Graham and thumped an unstoppable shot high into the net from 20 yards giving Fleming no chance – another very well worked and finished goal to make it 2-0 and it stayed that way until half-time.

The second half was always going to be an uphill task for Montrose if Thistle kept going without just sitting on their lead. Johnson replaced Milne at the start and for as few minutes Montrose were on top with both Masson and Webster having shots blocked.

Disaster struck however as a free kick was awarded to Thistle on 52 minutes 20 yards out. Fleming covered the left-hand side but STUART BRANNIGAN hit it hard and high to the top right-hand corner to make it 3-0. From then on it became damage limitation for Montrose against a very good Partick Thistle side but it soon became 4-0 when SCOTT TIFFONEY cut in from the left to squeeze a hot cleverly past Fleming at the near post on 55 minutes.

Steeves saw yellow for a foul before Montrose on 61 minutes brought Masson and Webster off replaced by McGale and Callaghan. Thistle also made a change thankfully taking off Tiffoney replacing him with Cardle. Nothing changed as far as the pattern of play was concerned however as Montrose tried to keep more possession and regain some composure. On 71 minutes Watson and Ross Campbell replaced McLean and Dillon which completed the Montrose changes but it left young Quinn in command at the back and he had already been yellow carded.

Still 20 minutes to go and credit to Montrose as they tried to take the game to Partick Thistle and had a spell when they had several corners all of which went unchallenged or too long.

At the other end Rudden looked to complete his hat-trick but wasted a good chance and was crowded out. The fifth goal came on 77 minutes as another ball in from the left was controlled with ease by SHEA GORDON who put it past Fleming and 5-0 it was. Cue Blair Lyons to come on for goal scorer Gordon but without any great action from the young player. Montrose saw out the last 10 minutes without further damage but at 5-0 the final result did immense damage to their goal difference and that could prove crucial.

It has to be said Montrose were not poor but simply on the night Partick Thistle were different class and fully deserved their win. A top five finish is not yet out of reach but Montrose must put this game out of their minds and get the Kilmarnock game out of the way to focus fully on the Cove Rangers game a few days later.
