Montrose 2 Airdrieonians 2

Both sides were well aware of the importance of the result, it was a must not lose game and the end result was just that with a point each and sharing four goals three of which were credited as own goals.

Montrose made three changes to their starting line up with Masson, McLean and Mochrie in for Callaghan, Rennie and Johnston. Referee was Peter Stuart.

The game started slowly and it was 4 minutes before any threat which ended with a 30 yard free kick by Airdrie being swung it for Lennox to gather cleanly. Webster was first to show what Montrose could do but his cross fell short of McLean and his next effort went just wide of the far post. In a spell of Montrose pressure Mochrie down the left put in a dangerous looking cross but the Airdrie defence scrambled it away. Back came Airdrie and a cross from the left found no support as Lennox gathered safely. It was end to end for a while and a goal at either end looked on the cards. Mochrie, Cammy B, Webster and Milne were in the thick of it for Montrose as Carrick for Airdrie saw yellow for not retreating 10 yards as Montrose took a free kick. Airdrie looked dangerous down both flanks and that was to tell later in the game.

It was Montrose who scored first as CAMMY F BALLANTYNE took a pass from wide left in his stride and hit a hard low shot into the bottom left corner from 20 yards central on the half hour mark to make it 1-0. Milne followed that with a 20 yarder which flew just wide then Fordyce had a shot deflected for a corner as the ball bobbled around uncomfortably in the Montrose box. Masson was next to see a yellow card for a hard tackle then right on the stroke of half-time Montrose made it 2-0 as a hard-hit Webster cross was deflected into his own net by SEAN CRIGHTON.

For the start of the second half Montrose replaced Webster with Johnston. Airdrie clearly meant business in the second half and started to dominate play. They pulled it back to a 2-1 score line as Montrose failed to deal with a corner and the ball ended in the back of the net with RUSSELL McLEAN deemed to have the last telling touch for an own goal on 51 minutes. From that point on Airdrie piled on the pressure with heaps more possession and corner after corner. Montrose broke up play on 59 minutes with two substitutions, Rennie and Watson on in place of Mochrie and Masson.

Cammy B saw yellow for a pull-back but still Airdrie pressed forward with wayward shots failing to count and several more corners being scrambled away. Turner for Airdrie saw yellow for dissent and then Connell replaced Roy on 67 minutes. The equaliser should have come as a corner from the right landed at the edge of the Montrose 6-yard box but amazingly the shot went high and well over the top. A mazy run through the middle by Airdrie was not halted by Montrose and Lennox parried the ball low down with Steeves clearing it up and away.

Montrose needed to settle back into a rhythm but as the clock ticked down the question was if all the Airdrie pressure would be too late. Stokes came on for Carrick on 83 minutes as yet another shot went high and wide. Johnston as usual was full of running up front as Montrose hoped to cash in on a breakaway. Watson hit a great cross from wide left but Johnston’s header was just too high. Back came Airdrie with only three minutes left for Montrose to hold out. Lennox again came to the rescue by finger tipping a good shot from O’Reilly for another Airdrie corner which was scrambled away. Into stoppage time now and Montrose replaced McLean with MacFarlane who thus made his debut.

Then disaster struck for Montrose on 94 minutes. AARON LENNOX who had a great game for Montrose up to that point seemingly took his eye off a relatively routine cross and fumbled it into his own goal. A disaster for him and Montrose but the final result of 2-2 was probably no less than Airdrie deserved after a storming second half comeback.

Montrose have two remaining games of the scheduled 18 starting with a tricky away night at Partick Thistle on Thursday night but despite the last gap disappointment against Airdrie they have a squad well capable of getting a result but will need to focus fully right to the end and perhaps maybe a little bit of fortune might also come their way as it did for Airdrie.
