Montrose 3 East Fife 0

A very timely and welcome win for Montrose after the enforced break as Manager Stuart Petrie again used his squad with Cammy B, Cochrane and Watson out of the starting line up and replaced by Quinn, Callaghan and Masson – how good it is to see Terry back and playing in his very own typical style. This looked like a tricky game for Montrose against an in-form East Fife side who have a bit of a bone to pick with Montrose after the last two seasons.

Referee was Scott Lambie as Montrose got quickly into their stride in determined looking fashion. Early crosses from Webster and Steeves could have ended better but at the other end the Fifers were not doing any better but they were very fast down both flanks and that was an early sign of their attacking strength.

It was Montrose who had the better of play with more possession and Webster won a free kick on the edge of the 18-yard box as he tried to barge his way through. Callaghan tried to wrong foot keeper Brett Long with the free kick but it sailed just over the angle of post and crossbar.

At the other end Agnew was creating chances for East Fife with dangerous crosses which fortunately were scrambled away. Then the first telling move of the game. Johnston did well down the left and cut it inside to GRAHAM WEBSTER who buried his shot from close range to make it 1-0 to Montrose on 16 minutes.

McLean had a chance a couple of minutes later from a through ball by Webster but the ball bounced awkwardly and a defender hacked it away. Steeves then blasted a 25 yarder just over the top as a corner was headed away and landed in his path. Another goal then would have been deserved on the balance of play but a loose ball in midfield almost set up an equaliser for East Fife but Waddell saved the day with a last-ditch tackle when a goal looked like the outcome.

Agnew was making things tick for East Fife in midfield aided by Davidson but fortunately for Montrose the Fifers did not convert any of their chances. Dunsmore was yellow carded for dissent but Montrose doubled their lead on 39 minutes as Johnston again did well this time down the right. His pass was to Mclean who slotted it to ANDREW STEEVES on a charge and he made no mistake to make it 2-0

The danger was still there at the other end however but again a chance was wasted as Smith got himself into a good position only to scuff his shot and allow Lennox then Webster to clear the danger. Both Wallace and Davidson also had efforts blocked as Montrose held out for a 2-0 half-time lead.

Montrose made no changes for the start of the second half but East Fife made 3 changes with Slattery, Davidson and Dunsmore off replaced by Dunlop, Swanson and Fenton. The Fifers clearly meant business as they enjoyed almost total possession in the early stages of the second half before Montrose got to grips again and a Fifers goal at that time was to be avoided.

The early East Fife pressure created chances but almost always the final effort flew well wide or over the top as Montrose kept them out of close range.

Montrose made their first change on 56 minutes as Masson was replaced in midfield by Milne who appears to have found his form well and it soon showed.

It was LEWIS MILNE who made it 3-0 to Montrose on 59 minutes as he took a pass from Webster and found the bottom corner across keeper Long with a hard-hit shot. As the game progressed he well deserved his goal and when Chis Mochrie came on a few minutes later they very soon got into a working partnership which could flourish well for Montrose. Mochrie came on in the 66th minute as part of a triple substitution which also saw Watson and Rennie on with Callaghan, McLean and Johnston making way with their job well done on the night.

Mochrie and Milne immediately caused problems and that upset East Fife as they tried to get back into the game.

On 75 minutes Montrose made their final change as 21-year-old new loan signing Robbie McGale from University of Stirling came on for Waddell as the Mo switched to a flat back four with Webster dropping back to allow McGale to figure in a wide right position.

East Fife also made a change as Brown replaced Austin. Into the last ten minutes and Montrose were again controlling play having stemmed the East Fife threat without damage to the scoreline. Both sides had chances late on but for Montrose Rennie headed wide under pressure and East Fife again failed to find their shooting boots as another effort flew high and wide.

Late in the game Paul Watson was yellow carded for a full-blooded challenge for a 50/50 ball but it was too full blooded for referee Scott Lambie’s liking. At the very last gasp Brown beat the Montrose offside trap but when one on one with Lennox he put his effort wide.

It ended 3-0 to Montrose and well deserved on the night with a welcome three points and a clean sheet in defence. Kerr Waddell again was Man of the Match for his great defensive display but well supported again by good performances from all of those in blue shirts on the night.
