Cove Rangers 1 Montrose 2

Just one change for the starting line up with Harry Cochrane replacing Chris Mochrie with the experience of Paul Watson also still in midfield. In central defence it again was Kerr Waddell and Sean Dillon in a solid looking line up with good options on the bench as well.

Referee Lloyd Wilson started it off with Cove Rangers hoping to remain unbeaten at home since joining the SPFL and in fact in any league game for 2 years or more.

It was Cove who set the pace early on with neat passing moves as the Montrose defence had to focus on their jobs against formidable opponents. It wasn’t all Cove however as young Harry Cochrane looked sharp down the right and was unlucky with the bounce when Cove looked uneasy.

McIntosh hit one over the bar from range then a Montrose loose ball in the area was intercepted but fortunately that ended up over the bar as well. Still only 10 minutes gone but Montrose had survived early pressure and started to get their own game together.

Chances came their way firstly to Milne as a Cammy F cross was headed just wide then a well hit corner found nobody at the far post.

Waddell was showing what a good defender he can be as he blocked shots, intercepted passes and generally supported Dillon in just getting it away! Cove shaded possession though and looked more composed on the ball but Montrose did well and the longer it stayed goalless the more they settled into the game. It lasted only until the 38th minute however as a Cove corner from the left was met at the far post by HARRY MILNE who scored from close range to make it 1-0 to Cove and that’s how it stayed at the break although Russell McLean saw yellow in the meantime for what referee Wilson deemed to be worse than other tackles.

Something had to change for Montrose if they were to get something out of the game but there were no changes at the start of the second half as Stewart Petrie held his nerve. McIntosh and McAllister both tried their luck but that man Kerr Waddell blocked both efforts.

Then came the break Montrose were hoping for. Andrew Steeves was fed up of being pegged back so decided to foray into the Cove box and was followed by McIntosh who felled Steeves from behind and a penalty it was in the 57th Minute. GRAHAM WEBSTER put it away nicely to make it 1-1 and game on again.

Cove now looked less assured and Higgins was yellow carded for a poor tackle on Cammy F as Montrose turned the game on its head. It was RUSSELL McLEAN who made it 2-1 to the Mo on 63 minutes when he turned his man just outside the box and hit a belter of a shot into the top corner giving keeper McKenzie no chance. It was a stunner in more ways than one.

Cue changes by both sides firstly as Montrose replaced Watson and Cammy F with Callaghan and Mochrie as Cove replaced their Harry Milne with Livingstone on 68 minutes. Minutes later Craig Johnston replaced Russell McLean as Cove made a triple substitution with their Watson on with Semple and Ross to replace Scully, McAllister and Masson on 76 minutes.

The clock was winding down as Montrose continued to shade possession in the second half and Cove found it hard to wrestle control back again. Chris Mochrie showed his class and Callaghan also proved his worth, both of them doing different but effective jobs in midfield. Ross Campbell replaced Webster on 87 minutes as a great chance for Cove went high and wide.

The last 5 minutes were survived somehow however as the writer lost the picture and awaited the final score on teletext to add to the tension. Final score 2-1 to the Mo.

Montrose had ended the long unbeaten home run of Cove Rangers and in the end just about deserved it. Kerr Waddell gets MOTM for his great defensive work but young Harry Cochrane gets a lot of credit as well in midfield. Then of course Russell McLean’s wonder goal was exactly what we know he’s capable of and today he proved it.
