Montrose 1 Falkirk 3

It was a re-shuffled Montrose side which started the League One programme with a tough home game against a strong Falkirk side, with Referee Craig Napier.

In the first move of the game Alston tested keeper Lennox but the keeper was equal to it and play swept to the other end as Watson tried his luck but his shot was saved low down. Morrison then had a lob just wide and he was to prove very much the engine room of the Falkirk team. Webster was next to find space and Johnston tumbled in the area but did not impress referee Napier.

Falkirk looked a bit sharper on the ball but Montrose were equal to it and were very much involved though you sensed the first goal in this game would be crucial and not to be given away lightly. Lennox made at least two good saves but Montrose still competed well yet that vital last touch eluded them as the clock ticked down towards half-time. Then disaster for Montrose as a long ball from the right found AKEEL FRANCIS on the left in space and he beat the advancing Lennox with a lob to make it 1-0 to Falkirk on 43 minutes. It stayed that way at half-time but it was hard on the Mo to concede at that point.

As the second half started Montrose had to risk more going forward - they had to score to get something from the game but equally the back door had to be protected. No changes for either side just yet.

Then the chance Montrose earned for themselves. A corner from the left was headed firmly home by AIDAN QUINN powerfully and unchallenged to make it 1-1 in the 49th minute. Game on again as Montrose gave as good as they got. Dillon saw yellow for a mis-timed tackle as Falkirk tried everything to re-gain the lead. Montrose kept it simple and awaited chances of their own as Falkirk made the first change with Leitch coming on for Alston and shortly after Rennie came on for the Mo to replace Johnston. Changes galore now as Falkirk responded with three more changes, Sammon, Lee Miller and Gomis on to replace Dowds, Francis and Todd as they threw everything at Montrose in the final 10 minutes.

Dixon saw yellow for a foul on Webster as Montrose looked good value at the 1-1 scoreline. Then just as at the close of the first half luck deserted Montrose also at the close of the second half as Falkirk won a penalty in the 85th minute as Lee Miller was brought down by Steeves's last ditch tackle. Referee Napier saw it as a red card offence as Montrose lost a very valuable player to add to a long list of others absent through injury. CALLUM MORRISON tucked away the penalty to make it 2-1

Ross Campbell came on for young Chris Mochrie but now entering stoppage time Montrose were more open at the back and missing Steeves as a long ball into that vacant position fell to ROBBIE LEITCH who made no mistake to make it 3-1. Montrose still found time to hit the post themselves but from deserving a point overall it was not to be as Falkirk earned their own luck right at the end and will feel fortunate to have left with all three points.

For Montrose it was an injury hit squad, but with many positives to take including the great games both young loanees Mochrie and Cammy F had. There was no shortage of effort and next up is East Fife away.
