Arbroath 3 Montrose 1

After Montrose had gained a well deserved point last Wednesday night there was the hope that a similar result at Arbroath would give a great chance of progress in the Betfred Cup, but the hosts had the same idea. Although there was not much between the teams on the day it came down to defensive errors and Arbroath made fewer than Montrose. Manager Petrie will be well aware of the problem when he looks at the first two give away goals if not all three.

The priority for Montrose is to hit the ground running in League 1 and Lennox was given pitch time behind a back four of Cammy B, Waddell, Quinn and Steeves. Allan was again the defensive midfielder but did not look comfortable there. Alongside him were Cammy F, Milne and Webster with Rennie and Johnston up front. For Arbroath there were new faces on show along with a strong looking line up on the bench which included Linn, Hilson, Gold, Donnelly and Virtanen. Referee was Graham Beaton.

New signing Connor Smith gave Arbroath an instant view of his ability in the opening minutes with quick dashes down the left flank and that was a threat all afternoon for the Mo who hit back with chances of their own with both Webster and Milne involved. It was Montrose who took the lead in the 10th minute when a long crossfield ball from Rennie was chested down and GRAHAM WEBSTER crashed it home from 18 yards out.

Shortly afterwards Swankie should have done better when from a corner Montrose let the ball bounce in the area without clearing it and it was only an outstretched foot that deflected Swankie’s effort wide. This was a good 10 minute spell of pressure by Arbroath until Montrose swept to the other end and forced two quick corners both of which were cleared easily. From the second one the ball moved swiftly down the right and GAVIN SWANKIE, not the biggest player on the park, got his head to the cross unchallenged to equalise and make it 1-1 on 27 minutes.

Montrose were creating chances as well and Cammy B was unlucky at the last gasp as the home defence crowded him out. At the other end defending was not as good when JASON THOMSON easily scored with another unchallenged header close in from a routine free kick to make it 2-1 in the 43rd minute. Just before the break Rennie who was having a quiet game hit the Arbroath bar with a 30 yard free kick to remind us what he is good at.

For the second half Arbroath replaced Hamilton with Gold and really should have added a third goal when another free header fortunately for Montrose went straight at Lennox. Yet Montrose were well in the game despite not playing as fluently as usual. Three more Mo corners were gained and from one a Waddell header was just too high.

The Montrose substitutions started in 66 minutes with Watson and Hawke on for Allan and Johnston. Hawke had the ball in the net with his first touch as we thought it was the equaliser but a raised linesman’s flag deemed him to be marginally offside. Ross Campbell then replaced Rennie. Arbroath looking to seal the points brought on three experienced strikers in the 79th minute with Hilson, Linn and Donnelly on for Doolan, Ruth and the impressive Smith.

The game was slipping away from Montrose at this stage as the experience of their Championship opponents took its toll late on. Arbroath hit the post in the 86th minute then the killer third goal came.

Big defender TOM O'BRIEN found himself just outside the box seemingly delaying a pass until he delicately chipped it over Lennox and into the top corner to make it 3-1 and that was it for Montrose.

Still time for Watson and Campbell to be shown yellow cards to follow those for Gold and Ruth for Arbroath in what was certainly not an ill tempered game. Steeves had a goal bound effort charged down and a Hawke effort failed due to a last ditch tackle. Final score 3-1
