Montrose 3 Ross County 3 (4-5pens)

These two clubs meet so often in cup competitions that it’s almost like playing each other in the league. Except of course Ross County are in the Premier League and that was the main difference in the opening 15 minutes when Montrose were caught napping twice and conceded two goals.

Fleming was in goal with what on paper looked a back three but was in fact a back four of Cammy B, Dillon, Waddell and Steeves. Matty Allan was playing as a defending midfielder as the Mo have midfield injuries and joined Watson, Cammy F and Webster there whilst Johnston and Hawke were up top.

It was a very strong Staggies line-up as they must fancy their chances not only in this Group but also in the competition itself with a great chance of silverware.

It was Montrose who started the game looking to attack and two early corners were awarded but nothing came of either. It was fully 10 minutes before Ross County looked threatening but they used both pace and sharpness when they did have possession. It was they who took the lead against the run of play in the 12th minute when a deflected shot crept in from an OLI SHAW to make it 1-0

That increased to 2-0 in the 14th minute as the clever play of Charles-Cook caught Montrose napping and BILLY McKAY stooped to head in his low cross. Basically it was a class of play which was a jolt to the Montrose system.

However, Montrose did not disintegrate and instead warmed to the task and actually took the game to their premier league opponents. More corners were won, Webster and Johnston combined well to keep the pressure on but care was needed to ensure another lapse did not occur and send the game out of control early on. The Staggies had chances as well that has to be said but luck deserted Montrose when they rattled the woodwork twice before half-time and another Johnston effort hit the side netting. 2-0 to Ross County it was at half-time but the Mo had competed well.

Soon after the start of the second half the Staggies scored again to make it 3-0 and it was a well worked goal by the impressive wing player REGAN CHARLES-COOK. He cut inside from the right and carved out the left footed chance to hit a screamer past Fleming from 20 yards out. That you sensed might be the start of a rout but the Mo did not let the heads go down.

This Mo side have bottle and fitness to burn. The 60th minute arrived at 3 down and Stewart Petrie made full use of his substitutes. 4 of the 5 allowed all came on together with Ross Campbell, Aidan Quinn, Lewis Milne and the returning Martin Rennie taking the field as a determined Montrose side looked to get back in the game in never say die fashion.

That determination paid off firstly in 62 minutes as Rennie’s first touch combined with Steeves for GRAHAM WEBSTER to head home and pull it back to 1-3. It got better for Montrose in the 66th minute as the score pulled back to 2-3 when a CAMMY BALLANTYNE shot was deflected in by a defender and it was no less than Montrose deserved on the run of play. You could tell who were the premier league side but you could also tell Montrose were a very decent league one side as well. So all to play for with over 20 minutes to go.

Ross County made a couple of substitutions of their own whilst the Mo galvanised themselves against being caught napping again.

Staggies hit the post, Quinn and Fleming both saved the day and again the Mo deserved that. They were playing neat attacking football but needed care to keep the back door shut as well.

Ross County had two yellow cards in quick succession – were they getting rattled? The answer was yes, as Montrose unbelievably equalised in the 88th minute. Rennie and Campbell combined to give ANDREW STEEVES a clear sight of goal and he made no mistake to level the scores at 3-3 going into stoppage time.

After a few more bites on the finger nails it was a point each and on to penalties in a shoot-out for the extra point. The first 9 of the ten were all scored with ease as Webster, Steeves, Milne and Campbell scored for Montrose. It was left to young Rennie with the last penalty and he hit the bar to give the Staggies the extra point. A great shame for Rennie who had a good game in the 30 minutes he had on the pitch and if he continues in that vein it will be a shrewd move bringing him back to Links Park.

Overall a good display by Montrose in their first competitive game in over 6 months. League One will be tough this coming season but on this form Montrose look well prepared for what’s to come.
