GABLE ENDIE LEAGUE WINNING TRIO REACH CENTURY OF GAMES
Montrose FC players Liam Callaghan, Cammy Ballantyne and Craig Johnston have all recently made their 100th appearance for the Club.
Liam was Manager Stewart Petrie’s first signing at Links Park, arriving from Angus neighbours Arbroath in January 2017. The energetic and talented 24 year old midfielder was part of the history making squad the following season, making 26 appearances on route to receiving a Ladbrokes League 2 winners medal. In fact, Liam comes from a family with a strong footballing pedigree with his father Willie having played for Montrose in the 90's, his grandfather Willie Snr having played for Scotland in the 60's and his grandfather’s brother, Tommy having played for Celtic in the 70's.
Like Liam, Cammy was part of the Gable Endies Championship winning side in 2017/18, making 23 appearances, scoring once and being both named Player of the Month for November and part of the SPFL Team of the Year for League 2. The 22 year old arrived at Links Park in 2016 on loan from Dundee United and during his first two year spell at the Club made the bench for Scotland U/21’s against Estonia in March 2017. In the summer of 2018, Ballantyne moved to Dumbarton but returned a year later. Arguably one of the best right backs in the league, Cammy has again been a regular on the teamsheet this season and scored on the opening day of the campaign in a 3-3 draw against Premiership side Ross County.
Completing the trio of league winners is Liam’s cousin Craig, who joined Montrose in May 2017 from Cowdenbeath just days after helping the Central Park side preserve their place in League football. In his 26 games during Season 2017/18, the Kelty man netted 4 times earning himself the Player of the Month award for October. Fans favourite Johnston has now scored 19 Club goals including his first hattrick in the recent 7-1 defeat of Highland League Nairn County in the Scottish Cup.
Club Chief Exec Peter Stuart said, “I am delighted for all three of Liam, CJ and Cammy. They bring a real energy and exuberance to the side, and are all strong characters in the dressing room. They are all key members of the team and we look forward to them getting many more games under their belts here at Montrose.”
