Montrose 2 Forfar Athletic 0
Montrose defeated Angus rivals Forfar in a high tempo match at Links Park.
Terry Masson was the first player to have a clear chance on goal when he controlled Patrick Cregg’s ball over the top of the Forfar defence, but he could only shoot at visiting goalkeeper Marc McCallum.
Forfar came closer a minute later when Dylan Easton crashed a shot off the junction of Allan Fleming’s post and crossbar from 25 yards out.
Fleming was called into action in the 19th minute, the goalkeeper racing off his line to intercept Ross Meechan’s cross before it could reach former Montrose forward John Baird.
CRAIG JOHNSTON opened the scoring for the home side in the 21st minute, Jamie Redman slipping the ball through to the striker, sending him through on McCallum. He kept his cool and curled a shot into the bottom corner of the goal.
Baird should have equalised for Forfar in the 40th minute, but could only head over the bar from Adam Eckersley’s cross from wide on the left.
The first half ended with Eckersley smashing a free kick into the defensive wall then blasting the rebound high and wide of the goal.
Forfar started the second half on the offensive, Easton shooting straight at Fleming from 25 yards out.
The second half was a largely scrappy affair for long periods, with neither side able to create many clear-cut chances. Euan Henderson did come close to adding to the scoresheet in the 70th minute, controlling the ball in the box and firing a shot that McCallum held at the second attempt.
Thomas Reilly could have equalised for Forfar a minute later, but his low shot from the edge of the box flew through a crowd of players and narrowly wide of Fleming’s post.
A quick break from Montrose in the 75th minute almost paid dividends. Terry Masson stole the ball from Brad Spencer in the middle of the park and carried it forwards to the edge of the Forfar box before sliding a through ball in to the feet of Martin Rennie, whose shot was deflected wide.
Graham Webster came close a minute later, driving the ball at McCallum’s goal from the edge of the box, the Loons goalkeeper managing to parry the ball to safety.
Forfar continued to search for an equaliser, Dale Hilson sending a free kick high and wide of the target from 25 yards out in the 83rd minute.
But the visitors’ challenge was all but snuffed out with two minutes remaining when Montrose were awarded a penalty after John Baird tripped Euan Henderson in the box.
MARTIN RENNIE stepped up to take the kick, sending the ball to McCallum’s right and into the net.
Forfar’s misery was compounded in the first minute of stoppage time when Reilly was sent off after receiving a second yellow card following an off the ball altercation.
Montrose looked to capitalise on the brief numerical advantage, Henderson having a shot tipped wide of the post, and Rennie having a header from a Lewis Milne corner held on the line.
