Montrose 1 Elgin City 1

There were jubilant scenes at Links Park last Saturday as Montrose clinched the League Two title in front of a bumper crowd, ending their 33-year wait for silverware after a 1-1 draw with Elgin City

At times it looked as if Elgin might spoil the party, but it was a performance which perhaps typified why the Gables Endies sealed the title as they fought back, underlining their character and spirit in the dressing room.

It got off to a nervy start as Sean Dillon was short with a header back to Fleming, Sutherland read it but trod on the ball before he could get it under control.

Chris Templeman, who was playing his final game, came close with a header before Lewis Milne thought he had scored when curled a free kick towards the top corner but was denied by a terrific finger tip save from Iain Ross.

At the other end, Elgin were looking dangerous. A neat one-two between Sutherland and Cameron released the latter, but he was thwarted by the legs of Fleming. Sutherland then went close with a long range effort as the tension began to rise.

A point would be enough but it was always precarious. Montrose almost found the elusive opener that would have settled the home fans’ nerves but Terry Masson was denied by a brilliant save from ex-Broughty Athletic goalkeeper Ross.

Gable Endies fans’ fears were soon realised when ex-Peterhead striker SHANE SUTHERLAND curled in a delightful free kick, which he won, to give the visitors the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Montrose were fast out the traps in the second half with a renewed determination.

Jamie Redman powered a header straight at Ross before Liam Callaghan rifled in a shot which was also saved - but they did not have to wait much longer for the equaliser.

The ball was played into the box, Martin Rennie did brilliantly to stay on his feet and square the ball to JAMIE REDMAN who had the simplest of finishes.

They had further chances to add to their tally and finished the stronger. Masson came close before Templeman’s effort was somehow deflected wide.

Rennie almost put the seal on things towards the end for Montrose, but they were already in party mode as the referee blew his whistle for full-time.
