Montrose 3 Edinburgh City 0
Montrose recorded their biggest league win of the season and a third consecutive clean sheet with a solid team performance.
The home side opened the scoring in the 43rd minute when ANDREW STEEVES played a sharp one-two with Gary Fraser on the edge of the Edinburgh City box, the full back lashing his shot into the top corner.
Montrose doubled their lead in spectacular fashion in the 53rd minute when captain PAUL WATSON collected the ball inside his own half. The skipper spotted visiting goalkeeper Calum Antell off his goal-line and sent a perfectly-weighted 55-yard shot over his head and into the net.
CHRIS TEMPLEMAN completed the scoring in the 71st minute when he rose to head Cammy Ballantyne’s cross into the bottom corner.
Montrose were the better side throughout the encounter, and could have taken the lead in the first minute, but Gary Fraser’s glancing header from a Graham Webster cross dropped wide of the post.
Terry Masson should have done better in the 18th minute when he collected Kerr Hay’s square ball on the edge of the box, but he blasted his shot well over the crossbar.
Edinburgh City had two good chances in the dying minutes of the first half, former Scotland striker Craig Beattie sending a low shot across goal and Douglas Gair firing over after being sent clear through on goal.
With Montrose two goals ahead in the second half, Edinburgh City’s Marc Laird had a shot deflected wide, and Paul Watson again tried his luck from long range, his 40-yard effort flying over the crossbar.
The final quarter of an hour provided few chances, Webster shooting at Antell and Watson’s 20-yard free kick also held by the goalkeeper.
