Montrose 0 East Fife 2
A better second half, but the game was lost by then on a day when we were just unable to reach our best.
The game started brightly and a great touch by Rennie off a long ball found Johnston whose shot from a tight angle was well saved.
At the other end a crisp shot from Linton forced a diving save from Fleming.
After a good move a dipping cross from Henderson well held by Long.
A deflected Davidson shot from the edge could have gone anywhere but thankfully landed kindly for Fleming.
We almost shot ourselves in the foot when Dillon was short with his back pass but Dowds curled his effort around Fleming and the post.
Masson was next to try his luck with a long range effort which was high and wide.
With 25 minutes on the clock the breakthrough was made when after failing to clear our lines a shot from Watt deflected off Campbell and up and over the despairing Fleming.
We responded and when Rennie fed Henderson his dangerous shot was deflected behind for a corner but our troubles were doubled soon after when a good passage of play from the visitors ended with Watt breaking the lines and firing through Fleming’s legs from 12 yards.
We definitely up’ed our game after the break and almost halved the deficit immediately when great footwork by Antoniazzi allowed him to curl a left foot effort that forced a flying save from Long to touch it round the post.
Dillon then came close with a glancing header from a Campbell corner and soon after good interplay between Antoniazzi and Masson ended with Rennie’s shot blocked for a corner from which Redman’s header was cleared off the line
As we pushed to get a foothold back in the game, East Fife enjoyed more counter attacks and Dowds had the ball in the net, only for it to be ruled offside.
Second half sub Antoniazzi had brought a real spark to our attack, but when Redman headed down a free kick into his path, the young Don snatched at it and blasted over.
Top scorer Rennie came close when he turned and shot from 30 yards but it went agonisingly just wide.
Our last real chance fell to Redman on the edge of the area but his firm drive went straight at Long.
In truth, despite our improved play and possession in the second half, the visitors had the best chances to score and late on Smith first had a shot well saved by Fleming before then putting another good chance into the side netting.
One of those days, best quickly forgotten and we can now start to focus on a mouth-watering Scottish Cup tie next week against Dundee United, C’Mon the Mighty MO!!
