Montrose 3 Peterhead 2

Montrose twice came from behind to record a victory over title rivals Peterhead and move three points clear at the top of League 2.

JORDAN BROWN had put the visitors ahead in the 37th minute when he headed in from Jamie Stevenson’s cross.

Montrose equalised 15 minutes into the second half. Gary Fraser failed to control the ball on the edge of the Peterhead box, but it rolled into the path of on-rushing TERRY MASSON, who stroked the ball into the bottom corner.

Parity lasted only three minutes, ALAN SMITH beating stand-in centre back Paul Watson, racing into the box and blasting the ball into Alan Fleming’s net.

CHRIS TEMPLEMAN scored Montrose’s second goal in the 71st minute. He miscontrolled Lewis Milne’s free kick but managed to stretch out a leg and poke the ball over the line.

Montrose found what proved to be the winning goal 10 minutes later when Gary Fraser’s chipped cross was headed in by LEWIS MILNE.

Peterhead had dominated the opening quarter of the match, William Gibson hitting the crossbar with a wind-assisted free kick from wide on the left. Gibson was also denied by Fleming, while Stevenson shot wide from 20 yards out and Chris Johnstone managed to roll the ball across goal when it looked easier to score.

Cammy Ballantyne, returning for a third loan spell at Links Park, could have scored in the 59th minute when Templeman back-heeled the ball into his path, but the wingback blasted the ball over the crossbar.

Rory McAllister passed up several chances to score as Montrose’s rearguard action kept the visitors at bay in the final 10 minutes.
