Montrose 3 Elgin City 0
Montrose Football Club remain at the top of the League Two table, six points clear of Peterhead after their second 3 – 0 home victory in a week against Elgin City on Saturday to firmly put their mark down to fellow league members.
Montrose have goalkeeper Allan Fleming to thank for saving an early second half penalty which could have swung the match either way to keep them on track. The victory also put the Gable Endies ten points clear of visitors Elgin City who slipped out of the top four and set them up nicely for the forthcoming matches against Stirling Albion and Peterhead.
After the victory over Berwick Rangers, Montrose were unchanged with the only change being on the bench where assistant boss Ross Campbell replaced Liam Callaghan.
Montrose started the match on the front foot with Ballantyne linking up with Fraser before sending a cross along the six yard area which was just missed by Redman.
The Gable Endies didn’t have long to wait to open the scoring and it came about in the sixth minute. Matty Allan went on a surging run out of defence before he slipped a great pass through to TERRY MASSON who took his time before firing into the bottom corner for his fifth goal of the season.
Allan Fleming kept the Montrose lead in tact pulling off a great save to deny Bruce Anderson in the eighth minute when he latched onto a clearance from a Reilly free kick.
Montrose could have had added to their tally in the tenth minute when Fraser went on a surging run into the box before slipping a pass to Templeman who sliced his shot into the side netting.
Two minutes later Jamie Redman got on the end of a Templeman cross only to see his shot blocked by a visiting defender.
In the 28th minute Elgin City had a rare opportunity when Steeves fouled Anderson who took the free kick himself but only fired into the arms of Fleming.
Montrose then went straight up the park themselves and Martyn Fotheringham took a Masson pass in his stride only to send his long range effort straight into the arms of Waters.
Allan Fleming pulled off a brilliant save when he diverted a header from his own team-mate Iain Campbell onto the post as Montrose tried to clear a Reilly free kick.
Montrose almost scored a great goal in the 33rd minute. Andrew Steeves crossed to the back post where Templeman headed down to Redman who teed up Masson, it looked easier to score but the midfielder blasted over from six yards out.
The second half was only two minutes old when Elgin City where presented with a great opportunity to equalise when they were awarded a penalty kick. Sean Dillon was penalised for an off the ball incident with Chris McLeish and referee Milne pointed to the spot. Brian Cameron stepped up to take the penalty kick but Allan Fleming pulled off a brilliant stop to keep Montrose ahead.
Ballantyne was then shown dissent before play could resume.
Two minutes later Sean Dillon picked up Montrose’s second yellow card of the afternoon for a challenge on Anderson on the half way line.
In the 51st minute Montrose had a let off when Cameron's corner kick was headed out by Montrose only for Jordan Allan to hook the ball over the crossbar.
Montrose doubled their advantage in the 55th minute when ANDREW STEEVES played a one two on the edge of the area with Gary Fraser and drove a right footed shot into the bottom corner for only his second league goal for the club.
In the 62nd minute Elgin City made their first switch with Chris Dodds replacing Lewis Strapp.
Martyn Fotheringham then became the third Montrose booking of the afternoon when he showed dissent to referee Milne after a decision didn’t go Montrose’s way.
Templeman then went close for Montrose two minutes later when he headed over from an Iain Campbell corner kick.
With twenty five minutes remaining Montrose made a double switch with Watson and Johnston coming on to replace Fotheringham and Templeman.
Darryl McHardy was then booked for a crunching tackle on substitute Johnston.
The visitors made another change when Declan Bryne replaced Chris McLeish.
Montrose made the three points safe with a third goal in the 71st minute. Craig Johnston went clear on the right and blasted in a shot which Waters managed to block but the impressive JAMIE REDMAN was on hand to knock the ball into the empty net. His first goal for the club and he was delighted.
Before play restarted the visitors made another change sending on Smith for Reilly.
Two minutes later it was a final change for Montrose with Graham Webster replacing goalscorer Masson.
With ten minutes remaining Fraser headed down a Dillon free kick only for Webster to see his shot held by Waters.
In the 87th minute Montrose should have added a fourth Craig Johnston found himself through on goal down the right hand side channel of the box but he shot inches wide with Fraser totally unmarked in the middle.
