Montrose 1 Edinburgh City 0
A second half goal from Craig Johnston was enough to give Montrose all three points on Saturday as they started off the second quarter of the season with another victory.
Their second 1 – 0 win on the bounce saw them reduce the gap at the top on Stirling Albion to two points as the leaders went down to another home defeat.
The game won’t be remembered as a classic by any means with the strong wind spoiling the match as a spectacle for the fans.
After the victory over Berwick Rangers, Montrose made one change to their line up with Chris Templeman replacing Gary Fraser in attack
Montrose lost the toss and found themselves shooting into the wind for the first half and struggled at the start to keep the ball in play at times.
The visitors created the first real opening when Masson fouled Walker on the touchline. Craig Thomson took the kick but could only send his effort well over the crossbar.
Three minutes later the hosts had an even better opening when Johnston was penalised for bringing down Laird just outside the box. This time Josh Walker’s effort was low and straight into the Montrose wall.
Edinburgh City should have opened the scoring with 16 minutes gone. Iain Campbell miss judged the flight of the ball and allowed Craig Beattie in on his blind side. Thankfully for Montrose his outside of the boot effort was well saved at the near post by Fleming.
A lighting break by the home side won them a free kick after Chris Templeman was fouled near the touchline. Iain Campbell sent over a perfect free kick which was completely missed by his team-mates in the six yard box.
Montrose came even closer on the half hour mark when a cross from the right by Liam Callaghan was met by the head of Terry Masson but his effort was tipped over by Antell in the Edinburgh City goal.
Five minutes before half time ex Celtic and Hearts forward Craig Beattie tried his luck from 40 yards out but his wind assisted effort flew over Fleming’s crossbar.
In the opening minute of the second half Montrose won a free kick in a good position just outside the box when Steeves was tripped. Iain Campbell took the kick but his low effort went straight through in Antell’s arms.
With 52 minutes gone a great through ball from Ballantyne split open the visiting defence and found Callaghan he took a touch before sending his effort just over the crossbar.
Ten minutes into the second half Edinburgh City made their first change of the match when Lewis Allan came onto replace Ashley Grimes.
A minute later Montrose came so close to opening the scoring. Ballantyne sent over the perfect low cross to the near post Templeman just failed to make contact with the ball but it hit off Jesus Garcia Tena and went inches wide of the post. Iain Campbell took the corner kick and the ball just went over the bar.
Montrose finally made the breakthrough with an hour gone. Ballantyne battled for the ball at the edge of the area and he found CRAIG JOHNSTON who took a touch before blasting a low effort into the bottom corner for his fourth strike in three games.
Sixty seconds later Montrose won a corner kick which was taken by Masson it found Chris Templeman who could only hook his effort over the crossbar.
Edinburgh City were still a dangerous side on the break and Montrose had a let off when Andrew Blake played a one two on the edge of the box before firing wide.
In the 70th minute substitute Lewis Allan was played in after some good passing by Edinburgh City but his shot was blocked for a corner kick.
Two minutes later Montrose made their first change of the afternoon when Graham Webster replaced Liam Callaghan.
Captain Paul Watson was taken off with 15 minutes remaining and he was replaced in the centre of midfield by Jamie Redman.
Montrose though they had grabbed a second goal with ten minutes remaining a corner kick from Masson was headed down by Allan and keeper Calum Antell made a fantastic point blank range save from Webster from two yards out.
Gary Fraser became the final Montrose substitution in the next minute when he replaced Templeman.
Fraser almost became an instant hero for Montrose seconds later but from point blank range he somehow headed Iain Campbell’s free kick wide of goal.
Chris McKee of Edinburgh City was booked with five minutes remaining as Stewart Petrie’s side held on for another crucial three points.
