Montrose 4 University of Stirling 1
Montrose moved into the third round of the Scottish Cup with an ultimately comfortable win over Lowland League side Stirling University.
CRAIG JOHNSTON opened the scoring in the 12th minute, blasting Chris Templeman’s flicked pass into Kevin Walker’s net.
The home side doubled their advantage four minutes later, JOHNSTON grabbing his second when he headed home from Iain Campbell’s corner.
Stirling moved back into contention in the 35th minute, player-manager Chris Geddes slipping the ball through to DAVID O’BRIEN, the winger firing past Alan Fleming in the Montrose goal.
The half-time scoreline flattered the visitors, as Montrose should have been several goals ahead by the break. Terry Masson had shot over the bar early on and whipped a shot past the post shortly after Johnston’s opening goal.
Connor McLaren hit the post from 20 yards out in the 22nd minute, while Johnston flicked a header wide from a corner. Templeman had the ball in the net in the 36th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Aside from their goal, Stirling’s best chances of the first half fell to former Montrose player Lewis Bonar, who blasted wide when sent clear by a mistimed Iain Campbell header, and Daniel Ashe, who shot well over the crossbar from 30 yards out.
Templeman came close in the opening minutes of the second half, heading straight at Walker from a corner.
IAIN CAMPBELL settled the Montrose players’ nerves in the 56th minute when his low free kick from the edge of the box trundled into the bottom corner.
The scoring was completed by GARY FRASER in the 78th minute, the striker marking his return from his loan spell at Arbroath by sidefooting Johnston’s cross into the net from six yards out.
Johnston had spent the second half desperately looking to complete his hat-trick, blasting a half volley wide of the post in the 59th minute. He also had a header blocked on the line by Ashe from a Webster cross in the 63rd minute, while Webster himself shot wide three minutes later.
Fraser was denied twice in quick succession by Walker after his introduction as a substitute, the goalkeeper first holding from a header and then pulling off a magnificent point-blank save to block and turn away a header from a Liam Callaghan cross.
Stirling continued to battle to the death, Geddes lashing a free kick over the Montrose defensive wall, only for Fleming to tip the ball around the post.
Johnston passed up a final chance to complete his hat-trick in the last minute, heading wide from Fraser’s cross to the back post.
