Stewart Petrie's unbeaten start to his managerial career came to a close with a heavy home defeat to Elgin City.

The visitors emerged triumphant from a scrappy encounter thanks to two goals in the first half and a third near the end.

Elgin opened the scoring in the 29th minute after Montrose gave the ball away in the middle of the park.  Chris McLeish raced down the left wing before squaring the ball into the box. Montrose's Paul Watson and Elgin's CHRIS DODD both stretched for the ball, which rebounded off the bottom of the post and into the net.

The Black and Whites doubled their advantage in the 40th minute when SHANE SUTHERLAND beat Montrose's Bolochoweckyj and sent a low shot across Jordan Millar and in off the far post.

SUTHERLAND completed the scoring in the 87th minute when Gregor Anderson missed his attempted interception of Craig Gunn's square ball, giving the striker time and space to apply an easy finish for his second goal.

The match could have played out differently if Gary Fraser had opened the scoring in the second minute, but his half volley flew over visiting goalkeeper Cameron Mackay and out for a goal kick.

Graham Webster should have done better in the 15th minute when he cut inside after a quick Montrose break, but his shot from the edge of the box was straight at the goalkeeper.

Cammy Balantyne came to Montrose's rescue in the 18th minute, heading Daryl McHardy's headed attempt off the goal line. Four minutes later, Dodd curled a shot wide of goal from the edge of the box.

Gary Fraser almost opened the scoring for Montrose in the 25th minute, connecting with Webster's low ball into the box but seeing his shot held by Mackay.

Chris Templeman was denied in the 42nd minute when his flick-on from Webster's corner was saved and cleared.

The second half opened with Elgin on the attack, a corner falling to Brian Cameron only for the midfielder to shoot across goal and out for a goal kick.

With the match already won, Elgin could have added a fourth goal in stoppage time, but Sutherland blasted his shot across the face of goal from the edge of the box.
