Montrose - Berwick Rangers -
MONTROSE were unlucky not to record their first home win of the season with a spirited performance against Berwick Rangers.
The Gable Endies were the better team throughout the encounter, and managed to hit the Berwick woodwork twice, but couldn’t find a goal to take all three points.
Montrose attacked from the start of the first half, Gary Fraser seeing a shot blocked after a good pass from Graham Webster in the third minute.
Berwick threatened Montrose on the counter attack in the 12th minute when Michael McKenna surged through the middle of the park before releasing Jordan Sheeryn. The winger burst to the edge of the box but hammered his left foot shot over the crossbar.
Chris Templeman passed up the first of several chances that came his way during the course of the afternoon in the 13th minute, heading wide from a Ryan Ferguson corner.
The same player headed over the bar three minutes later from a Ross Campbell cross.
Campbell almost put the home side ahead in the 18th minute when he received a return pass from Fraser in the box, but his shot was blocked and sent wide for a corner by visiting keeper Kevin Walker.
Webster headed over from a Paul Watson cross from wide on the left in the 22nd minute, while McKenna shot wide at the other end a minute later.
Montrose were inches away from opening the scoring in the 28th minute when Ferguson beat his marker and played the ball into Templeman’s feet. He turned away from Robert Wilson and crashed a shot off the underside of the crossbar, Brian Martin booting the ball out for a corner before it could bounce into the net.
Templeman was denied by the woodwork again on the hour mark when he received a pass from Kieran McWalter and sent a low shot past Walker, only for the ball to bounce off the inside of the far past and roll across goal before Graeme Beveridge kicking the ball out for a corner.
Iain Campbell was the next player to create a chance for Templeman, his free kick headed wide by the former Brechin striker.
Templeman almost turned creator himself in the 78th minute, sending the ball across goal from the left byeline, but there were no Montrose players on hand to apply the finish.
