Stirling Albion 7 Montrose 0

Montrose slumped to a humiliating 7-0 defeat at Forthbank on Tuesday after a performance labelled “embarrassing” by manager Paul Hegarty.

“They were stronger, quicker and faster,” he said.

“We had no courage whatsoever. We were well beaten, and it is an embarrassment to see what was on display.

“We are now in a position which is precarious. The players have to take more responsibility. You can’t hide, because that is what happens when you do.”

Hegarty made just one change from the weekend’s draw with East Fife, with Terry Masson replacing Chris Templeman, a move which meant Ross Campbell was pushed forward.

The visitors started the game brightly and Graham Webster flashed a powerful shot just wide of Chris Smith’s post.

Dickson went close at the other end before Gary Fraser worked his way into a great position before firing a cross along the six-yard line, but none of his teammates were able to get a telling touch.

The hosts started to dominate, and Smith drew a decent stop from Alex Tokarczyk before Willie Robertson missed the target.

However, the Gable Endies fell behind moments later and they were masters of their own downfall.

On-loan goalkeeper Tokarczyk flapped at a corner, the defence failed to clear and the ball fell to Doris who lashed home.

The Binos pressed home their advantage with two more goals scored by Smith just before the interval.

The former Motherwell man ran from his own half under no pressure before sliding the ball beyond Tokarczyk, then headed his side into an unassailable lead in stoppage time after Doris had flicked a Mark Lamont corner on.

If the visiting fans thought they might see a change in their fortunes in the second half they were mistaken, and they fell further behind 40 seconds after the restart.

The ball broke to Smith around 20 yards out, and he curled an unstoppable shot into the top corner to complete his treble.

It would go from bad to worse for the visitors, if that was possible, two minutes later as Smith played in Lewis McLear.

Nobody picked up the St Mirren loanee, who had the easiest of tasks to finish beyond Tokarczyk into the bottom corner.

Montrose were offering very little going forward but in a rare foray into the Albion box, substitute Templeman was denied by a terrific Phil Johnston tackle.

There was very little action until the final 10 minutes, when the hosts added a further two goals to their tally.

First Dickson worked himself into a shooting position and finished well, before Doris knocked home a Moses Olanrewaju cross from close range.

Andrew Steeves was perhaps lucky to escape with only a yellow card for a robust tackle on Robertson as his frustration got the better of him, but the referee was content to book him and the remaining seconds passed without incident.
