Under 17s beat local rivals in Cup (22/04/08)
Montrose won a competitive but very entertaining match at Gayfield on Sunday against their local rivals following a solitary Gray strike late in the first half. Montrose won more comfortably than the score line suggests but good goalkeeping and weak finishing resulted in a nervy finish.

KEVIN DEPARTS FOR BLACKBURN ROVERS (06/04/08)
All at Montrose Football Club are delighted with the news that Youth Co-ordinator for the last two season's Kevin Cruickshanks has landed a job with English Premiership side Blackburn Rovers
Kevin joined the Lancashire giants earlier this week as their new Scouting and Recruiting Co-ordinator.
The 32-year-old admitted the news that he had beaten off opposition from more than 100 applicants to secure the post had left him stunned.
He will now liaise with Rovers manager Mark Hughes on a daily basis, profile all the club's major transfer targets and co-ordinate the movements of their 50 scouts across the globe.
Kevin's only previous football club experience came from working as an office manager and youth administrator at Third Division Elgin City and Montrose.
"It's unbelievable," he said. "When they phoned and told me I had the job, I actually had to sit down. I think I said two or three times 'Are you serious?'
His first three games when he joins the club are against Tottenham Hotspur at home, Liverpool away and Manchester United at home.
Kevin revealed that his first task in his new job will be to arrange Blackburn's scouting itinerary for this summer's European Championships in Switzerland and Austria, arranging flights, accommodation and match tickets for the duration of the tournament.
"It's a brand new position which was created because their network became so big."
Kevin sent in his CV when the job was advertised on the club's website, and made a shortlist of eight applicants chosen to attend a first interview at the club.
But his dream chance almost became a nightmare when his car broke down en route to Blackburn and at the time of the interview he was just 10 miles south of Carlisle.
"I thought that was it over to be honest. When I phoned, they said they would understand if I just headed home but there was no way I was going to give up the opportunity." |
UNDER 17 LEAGUE CUP
Sunday 23rd March 2008
Raith Rovers 4 Montrose 2
Following their opening 3-2 home defeat to Cowdenbeath the Montrose Under 17's travelled to Dalgety Bay to take on Raith Rovers looking to put their first points on the board. The 17's went into the game minus five regular starters but took the opportunity to draft in Under 16 players Dan Stewart and Greg Kane to give them their first experience of SFL youth football.
Montrose started the game well and had their first shot on goal after only 10 minutes when a powerful shot by Ryan Stewart was parried wide by the keeper then cleared by a defender. On 20 minutes Montrose took the lead. NIALL MUNRO robbed the defender of the ball, drove into the box and slipped the ball past the oncoming keeper and into the net. Niall was involved in Montrose's next attack when he did well down the right before laying off to Stewart whose shot was turned wide by the keeper. Mark Russell was next up to test the Raith keeper when he fired in on goal from 35 yards, the keeper spilled the shot but a defender was there to clear the ball to safety. Raith equalised on 40 minutes with their first real attack of the game. A freekick into the box was bundled home at the far post. Shortly before the half time whistle Montrose deservedly regained the lead with a stunning strike. NIALL MUNRO collected the ball out on the left, beat his man and curled the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box leaving the keeper with no chance.
Only two minutes into the second half Montrose were left stunned when Ryan Stewart was sent off for allegedly stamping on his opponent. A bizarre decision which even left the Raith bench and players bemused. With the one man advantage Raith quickly took the lead scoring two goals in quick succession. The equaliser came on 50 minutes when the ball was slotted home at the back post. Raith's third came on 55 minutes from a header. As Montrose pushed for the equaliser Raith killed off their hopes with another header with just 10 minutes remaining. A battling performance by the Montrose players and a game of two halves with the sending off changing the flow of the game entirely.
