Interview with Sandy Wood - Match Programme - December 2011
DESPITE not having much time on the pitch so far this season goalkeeper
Sandy Wood is determined that his future will be with Montrose.
Wood started his career with Stonehaven youth before being scouted by
Aberdeen and a move to Pittodrie was swiftly on the cards. While still a
youth player he was released by the Dons and had hist first move to
Montrose in 2003. Moving through the youth ranks at Montrose it was
while he was in the under 18s side that his impressive form caught they
eye of Celtic.
Wood spent about three years with the Parkhead side, including a loan
spell back to Montrose, in a time that he describes as "really good"
before being released and signing for another Angus side, Forfar
Athletic.
He spent around two years at Station Park, picking up a few end of
season awards, but spent most of his second year out due to a knee
injury.
After a time out of the game due to the injury Wood came back to play
for junior sides Glenrothes and Tayport before being signed by then
manager Steven Tweed to bring him back to Montrose.
Now in his third stint at the club Wood put in a number of impressive
performances during pre-season but has so far been consigned to the
bench during competitive fixtures.
Wood said: "I was gutted not to be in the team at the start of the
season, it felt a bit like the rug had been pulled out from under me. I
didn't fall out with anyone over it but it was disappointing."
Although keen to be playing again, Wood is content to bide his time on
the bench until he gets back to the first team. He said: "I want to play
but I'm not going to leave the club. I'll stick it out and hopefully
I'll get a game sooner or later. It's not like I'm sitting on the bench
thinking this is a total nightmare and I don't want to be here.
"I want to do well with Montrose and I think at the minute I get on well
with all the coaches and the players so I just have to knuckle down and
get on with it."
One thing Wood has not been too impressed with this season has been,
like with many others, the inconsistency which has led to some
undeserved results. He said: "We have been so inconsistent but I think
there has been an improvement in the last two weeks, for example we had
the two really good games against Ayr so there was no excuse to get beat
by Berwick on Saturday.
"It's up to the team to sort it out but I still think getting to the
play-offs are achieveable, there is no reason why not."
As for being knocked out of the Scottish Cup in the third round, Wood
takes a wry viewpoint, he said: "It is disappointing, we could have had
the 'glamour' tie of Livingston away - I think that pretty much sums up
our season!
"Seriously though we were disappointed to get put out, we played well in
both games and had good chances in the first game and the replay."
As for high points for the season Wood looks towards how well his team
mates have been getting on. He said: "I'm delighted for Martin Boyle,
he's done really well so far despite the pressure on him.
"Especially with Aaron [Sinclair] doing so well down at Partick it'll be
good to see Boyle doing the same and if he keeps improving the way he is
then there is a good chance of that."
So what does the future hold? He said: "With my new job I want to keep
playing part-time at the highest level I can.
"In the ten years or so I've been following Montrose they've never been
up or down or really done anything so I'd like to be here to achieve
something with the team.
"In the meantime I'm not going to go in the huff about being on the
bench for awhile. I was so delighted with my pre-season and thought
there could be no possible way that I was going to be dropped so it was
pretty disappointing when I was.
"But I'm just going to wait and I want to get back in through my own
merits."
