In Conversation with Hugh Davidson by Sean Graham - August 2009
Do you think that now the club have a bit of stability with Steven Tweed hopefully given a full season at the club, things will be different this season?
Yes, we now have an excellent management team with great experience who we can all continue to learn from. This stability will prove vital during a long season.
Did the changes and uncertainty have an effect on season as a team last year?
Yes it was unfortunate all the changes last season, however, that is now past and we must focus fully on this season.
What about the changes at the club-11 so far to date, have you had the chance to get to know your new team mates?
When you're training, playing, and travelling as often as we do you get to know your new team mates reasonably quickly. Let's just say there are few characters!
Do you think this new Montrose team can gel together quickly and put in a good challenge for the title or at least promotion this season?
Promotion is always the aim at the start of a new season, and providing we can keep everyone fit and free from suspension then I don't see why this can't be achieved.
You have already given Inverness Caledonian Thistle a tough game and were unlucky to go out of the ALBA Cup was that a disappointment or a sign of how things can turn round?
It was disappointing to lose against Inverness especially after the effort that the players (and our fans) put in during the game; however it was a confidence boosting performance for the team.
What about your responcibilities, how happy/shocked were you that you were given the captaincy last season?
I was surprised but very flattered when the manager asked me to become club captain last season. I hope to repay the faith he has shown in me.
How do you deal with this extra responsibility-are you a talker or a shouter?
I have never been one to bawl and shout on the park; however as long as instructions are passed on clearly then this can prove just as beneficial.
Did you feel being the longest serving at the club, you would be appointed captain?
No not necessarily, there are others in the team who I believe would also be good candidates for the role.
By all accounts you had a good year last year (and I am not just talking about your predictions last year!) with your awards as Player of the Year and Directors Player of the Year - how does it feel knowing that you are so highly though of at the club?
It means a lot, I genuinely did not expect to receive all those awards but was very grateful.
What about your aims for Montrose this season?
To gain promotion to the 2nd division, perform well and enjoy my football.
Which teams do you think will challenge for the title this season?
I am sure all teams will take points from each other, however I think Forfar Athletic under Dick Campbell will have a strong team this season.
