» Montrose v Elgin City 25/02/12

IRN BRU Scottish Football League
Division Three
Saturday 25th February 2012
Montrose 2 Elgin City 3

A HAT-TRICK from Elgin City’s Craig Gunn gave Elgin a win over Montrose by the odd goal in five at Links Park.
Gunn opened the scoring in the sixth minute when he turned Jonathan Smart and fired a low shot into the bottom corner of Michael Andrews’ goal.
Montrose found an equaliser just before the half-hour mark, Terry Masson picking the ball up outside the box and curling a sublime left footed shot inside the far post.
But Elgin went in at half time back in front. Gunn appeared to be offside when the ball was played through to him, but the flag stayed down and powered past Smart and fired into the net.
It took Montrose only six minutes of the second half to find another equaliser. Elgin failed to clear, allowing Martin Boyle to control the ball, turn and shoot low into Zander Clark’s net.
Elgin went ahead for the third and final time with 20 minutes remaining. A long free kick into the box dropped for Gunn, who poked home.
Both sides created plenty of chances during the match. Jamie Winter came close nine minutes in, seeing a 25-yard drive deflected wide. Cameron’s corner fell at Boyle’s feet at the back post, but his shot clatter off the outside of the upright and out for a goal kick. Lloyd Young also came close, heading wide from the edge of the box.
Garry Wood, seeking his first goal since returning to Links Park, was unlucky to see his low shot fly wide 20 minutes in.
Elgin’s Jamie Duff almost made a name for himself for all the wrong reasons, heading over his own goalkeeper after 33 minutes, only to see the ball drop wide of the post for a corner.
Boyle could have put Montrose ahead just two minutes after his equaliser, but lashed his volley from a Cameron cross into the side netting.
A lack of communication between Smart and Andrews almost cost Montrose on the hour mark, the centre back’s header fumbled by the goalkeeper and allowed to drop out for a corner. But Andrews regained his composure to claim the cross.
Boyle had the ball in the net for the second time in the 63rd minute but was adjudged to have been offside when the ball was played.
Elgin should have extended their lead in the 76th minute when Gunn had a shot parried, but Paul Millar screwed his shot from the rebound wide of target. A minute later, Archie MacPhee’s long range shot flew wide.
Boyle continued to seek an equaliser until the death. He could have found one with six minutes to go, but appeared to be nudged as he tried to shoot, his shot rolling wide.
Montrose’s last chance of the match saw a Cameron free kick punched out by Clark, Winter shooting wide from the loose ball.
