IRN BRU Scottish Football League
Division Three
Saturday 20th February 2010
Montrose 0 Elgin City 4

Ten-man Montrose succumbed to a heavy home defeat at the hands of fellow Division Three strugglers Elgin City.
Chris Hegarty’s dismissal three minutes before half time was followed by four Elgin City goals, two of them deep into second half injury time.
The first arrived in first half stoppage time, Shane Sutherland knocking the ball into the net after Andrew McNeil had acrobatically kept out Paul Kaczan’s point blank header.
Elgin’s second arrived three minutes after the break, Gavin Morrison sliding in to finish from Jake Inglis’ square ball into the box.
The rout was completed in second half injury time, Craig Gunn rounding McNeil, shrugging off Alan Campbell’s challenge and placing the ball into the bottom corner. Fellow substitute David Smith added the fourth two minutes later, picking up Gavin Morrison’s square ball, beating Sean Crighton and shooting into low into the net.
While the goals arrived late, the scoreline did not flatter Elgin, who had dominated following Hegarty’s second yellow card.
As early as the opening minutes, Montrose allowed Elgin two free headers in the box, but the home side managed to settle, Steven Nicholas sending a 25-yard shot off the outside of the right hand post.
Montrose should have taken the lead in the 11th minute, Hegarty sending a free kick into the box. With Campbell about to head in on the goal line with goalkeeper John Gibson beaten, Elgin’s Mark Nicholson managed to head over his own crossbar to deny the home side his opener.
Fraser Milligan also came close in the 13th minute, beating Craig Frizzell and sending a cross into the box that foxed Gibson but landed harmlessly on the roof of the net.
Elgin came into the game more and more as the first half continued, Frizzell running past McNally into the box before swerving a shot wide of target. Six minutes later he sent a low curling shot into McNeil’s arms, while Jake Inglis shot wide from the edge of the box in the 26th minute.
Having seen Elgin take the lead in injury time, Montrose came close to equalising before the half time whistle, Gibson holding a 30-yard Aaron Sinclair shot.
Elgin’s second goal shortly after half time deflated Montrose’s hopes of a first home league win of the season, and Elgin dominated the second half. McNeil tipped a Nicholson header over the bar in the 53rd minute, although John Gemmell came close to finding a goal six minutes later, heading a Sinclair cross over the bar.
Sutherland came close to finding his second goal in the 65th minute, but could only drag his shot wide of the target. Paul Tosh could have continued his recent impressive scoring run in the 67th minute, but could only head directly at Gibson from a Sinclair free kick.
Elgin’s Gavin Morrison almost grabbed a spectacular goal in the 73rd minute, performing several keepie uppies as he burst into the box before sending a half volley wide of goal.
Montrose’s relief proved to be short-lived, Elgin grabbing the two injury time goals to record their biggest away win of the season.
