World Cup Fever Hits Links Park (08/07/14)
With the World Cup entering its dramatic final stages in Brazil, local teams played out an equally entertaining competition at Links Park recently.
The 5-a-side tournament was blessed with good weather and its fair share of inventive team names including ‘Bridie Mania’ and ‘Louis Suarez Ate My Hamster’.
Twelve teams played a round robin tournament in two groups with the two group winners playing off in the final. This brought together the Wishaw Warriors and Rolf Harris’s Didgeridoo’s. A close, tactical encounter seen the scores tied at 1-1 at the end of normal time, which gave the organisers a headache as this eventuality had not been planned for when making up the rules. So an impromptu extra time period commenced and the Golden Goal rule was resurrected – which had the desired effect as only minutes later the Wishaw Warriors clinched the winner. The medals, trophy and £100 prize money were presented by Montrose FC Management Team George Shields and Lee Wilkie. Many thanks to all those who took part.
