maitland joins locos on loan (26/07/10)
Montrose midfielder John Maitland has signed a loan deal with Highland League outfit Inveruruie Loco Works until the end of 2010. John joined Montrose in 2006 from Inverurie club Colony Boys Club and his form over the year has seen him move from the Under 17’s side through to the first team. He made his first team debut as a substitute against East Stirlingshire in April 2007 and he made a further appearance before the season’s end. John was handed a professional contract in the summer of 2007 after his good showings in pre season. Made is full debut for the club at Stenhousemuir in January 2008. A strong powerful midfielder with an eye for goal. Scored his first Montrose goal against Stranraer on 16th January 2010 and followed it up with his second two days later in the cup-tie against Edinburgh City. Has made fifty appearances for Montrose. Age 21.
Peterhead 5 Montrose 0 (26/07/10)
The new 2010/11 season got underway for Montrose Football club on Saturday and it got off to a disastrous start as the Gable Endies crashed to another heavy defeat at the hands of second division Peterhead in the Alba ChallengeCup First Round.

The result now means that Montrose have lost their last three competitive fixtures by scores of 5 – 0, 5- 2 and 5 – 0. This following on from three pre season defeats with only one goal scored it hasn’t been the best of times results wise for Montrose.
On Saturday they played reasonably well in spells but at the end of the day defensive mistakes and the lack of firepower once again was their downfall.
Manager Steven Tweed will certainly have to add to his small squad before the season starts for real on August 7th against Queen’s Park or Montrose and their long suffering fans are in for another difficult season.

montrose 1 livingston 3 (14/07/10)
MONTROSE’S pre-season preparations continued with a hard-fought home defeat to Division Three champions Livingston.
Both sides gave an energetic performance on a cool Angus evening, but it was the visitors from West Lothian who emerged victorious.
Winger Bobby Barr opened the scoring in the 22nd minutes with an unstoppable shot from 25 yards that flew over home goalkeeper Sandy Wood’s head. Veteran striker Robbie Winters doubled the advantage 15 minutes later, turning in the rebound when Montrose failed to clear his initial shot. Substitute Mark McNulty completed the scoring with the last kick of the game, tapping home a Barr square ball from six yards out.
While Livingston were deserving winners, Montrose didn’t make things easy for their visitors, and were unlucky not to score themselves.

MONTROSE 1 RAITH ROVERS 3 (12/07/10)
An experimental Montrose Football Club side that contained two trialists in its starting line up and a further four on the bench got its pre season underway with a home match against Scottish Cup semi finalists Raith Rovers at Links Park on Saturday.
Montrose took the lead early in the match but the First Division visitors hit back to record a deserved win although Steven Tweed’s men can take a lot of positives from the match.

As you may know, MFC's preseason kicks off on Saturday at Links Park at home to Raith Rovers, followed by Livingston on Tuesday 13th and Brechin at Glebe Park on the 17th. These games provide an opportunity to see some of the new signings in action and gives Steven Tweed and Ray Farningham a chance to run the rule over some trialists. As you may have seen from the Courier recently, Tweed is looking to strengthen the Striking dept in particular.

Montrose add Smith (02/07/10)
Montrose have added a further midfielder to their squad with former Arbroath and Forfar player Nicky Smith signing on at Links Park. Gable Endies’ player-boss Steven Tweed is delighted that the 22 year old has opted to join his former Gayfield team-mate Terry Masson at the club saying, “Nicky was wanted by other clubs so I am delighted he has chosen to join us. We now have great competition for midfield places and Nicky is determined to show that he should be starting every week.”
Tweed brings in Farningham (02/07/10)
Montrose Player/Manager Steven Tweed has unveiled his former coach at Dundee, Ray Farningham, as his new assistant at Links Park. The duo worked together at Tayside when centre back Tweed played there a decade ago and they have been reunited as a result of Farningham being available after being released from his job as Assistant Manager to Jocky Scott at Dens Park back in March. Tweed’s previous assistant Jim Moffat left last month and the Gable Endies boss made his move then with Tweed saying, “I am delighted to be bringing Ray Farningham to Montrose. He is a very respected throughout football and was recently in a full time position at a big club, so the players here will benefit enormously from his experience.”
