Music @ The Mo' (24/04/14)
Links Park limbered up for the Montrose Music Festival with a Jammin' session last weekend. Heidrum took centre stage for what was a fantastic afternoon of acoustic fun. Many thanks to the band and to all those who came along and supported the event. Next month and for the first time Links Park will be an official venue for the Montrose Music Festival. We have plans to host two bands on the Saturday afternoon on a purpose built outdoor stage, allowing festival goers to enjoy the music in the comfort of the main stand. So please make a point of coming along to support the Club.

montrose 0 clyde 3 (20/04/14)
Montrose succumbed to a home defeat with a lacklustre performance against performance-chasing Clyde.
In a match where the home side struggled even to get a shot on target, Clyde took the lead in the 20th minute when Stuart McColm surged down the left wing and fired a cross into the box. Stefan McCluskey controlled the pass and knocked the ball into the middle of the goalmouth, enabling Michael Daly to fire a low shot past Stuart McKenzie.
The visitors doubled their lead six minutes later when Colin Wilson upended McCluskey, the striker picking himself up and dusting himself off before slamming the penalty high into the Montrose net.

peterhead 4 montrose 0 (06/04/14)
A second half collapse against champions elect Peterhead at Balmoor Stadium on Saturday finally ended Montrose Football Club’s chances of making the end of season play offs once again.
With four matches left to play Stuart Garden’s men find themselves some nine points behind Stirling Albion after another highly disappointing match.
Going in at the break Montrose had more than matched Jim McInally’s side but come full time the gulf in class between the two sides was clearly there for both sides to see.
Once Peterhead got their noises in front on 63 minutes there was only going to be one winner as the Montrose player’s heads went down and the side succumbed to their second heavy defeat in a week. The result coming some seven days after their 3 – 0 home loss to Elgin City.

HUGH DAVIDSON (2006 to 2011 - 164 appearances, 4 goals)
Fast forward 50 years and Hugh was possibly the modern day equivalent of Ronnie Cross. Never a showy player, he was nonetheless a great holding midfielder whose greatest skill was perhaps his ball winning ability. Indeed one of the goalkeepers he played with, observed how much better the defence played with "Scooby" sitting in front of them. A Scotland U-21 international whilst at Dundee United, he was signed from Arbroath and went on to become club captain and a fans' favourite. Decided to retire in 2011 and sadly have to go off injured after only 20 minutes of his final game at Hampden on the last day of the season.

COLIN MAVER (1988 to 1993 - 190 appearances, 31 goals)
Like Innes MacDonald, Colin had been attracting rave reviews for his performances for Keith -  in his case on the right-wing - when Ian Stewart brought him to Links Park in March 1988  He immediately became a fans’ favourite with a goal on his debut to secure a 1-0 victory at Brechin. Of modest stature, his gritty style coupled  pace with impressive dribbling ability. Colin also contributed more than his fair share of goals in his early years at the club before being moved infield to a more central role under the Rougvie/McLelland partnership and was another key member of the 90-91 promotion side, before returning to Keith at the end of season 92-93.

WILLIE NICOLL (1959 to 1962 - 103 appearances, 2 goals)
Willie had opportunities to sign for both Manchester United and Rangers as a youngster, but both moves fell through. Instead he made his name in the senior ranks with Arbroath in the fifties. He put pen to paper for Montrose in the summer of 1959, coinciding with a five year spell where the Gable Endies were regularly challenging for promotion to Division One. That was easily the most successful spell in the club’s history to that point and Willie’s commanding presence at centre-half helped to strengthen what had previously been a somewhat porous defence. A recurring back injury brought his career at Links Park to a premature end in 1962, though he played a few games for Brechin before retiring.

JOHN SHERAN (1979 to 1991 ( 3 spells) - 333 appearances, 22 goals)
A strong no-nonsense centre-back, there was nothing flash about John but he was a highly effective defender. It was therefore a major shock when Dennis D’Arcy decided to release him in 1983. Ian Stewart was clearly amongst those surprised by the decision, for when he was appointed manager six months later, he quickly brought John back to Links Park from Nairn County. It was an inspired move as in the 84-85 Championship season he contributed seven vital goals and was voted Player of the Year. He remained a regular until late 1987 when he quit for personal reasons before returning in 1989 for a year-long third spell. John returned to the club as assistant manager to Kevin Drinkell in October 1998 and took over from him two years later, before ultimately resigning in October 2004.

BRIAN THIRD (1971 to 1973 - 92 appearances, 50 goals)
Originally a full-back, whilst at Peterhead, Brian stood in as an emergency striker with phenomenal results, scoring seven goals in his first two games up front. He never looked back and in March 1971 Alec Stuart paid out a club record £2,000 for him. By the end of the following season, Brian had netted a respectable 17 goals in 43 appearances and Montrose fans were well aware of his powerful shooting ability and  exceptional pace, but could never have anticipated his contribution in season 72-73. In all he scored 33 goals in 49 starts, still a club record in a single season and was justly voted Player of the Year. Unsurprisingly, this attracted the attentions of other clubs and in the summer of 1973 he moved to St Mirren for £10,000.
