Ray Charles
Goalkeeper Raymond Charles signed for Montrose from Aberdeen junior side Banks O' Dee in 1981 and went on to play over 200 games for the club establishing himself alongside Davie Gorman and Davie Larter as `goalie greats'. His championship medal in 1984/85 was earned via 20 shut outs (the record in Scotland) that season including 7-in-a-row clean sheets. Ray also turned in a tremendous performance against Hearts in the 2 - 0 win at Tynecastle in August 1986. His transfer to First Division East Fife for £30,000 did not go down well with the supporters and he was given a warm welcome when he returned to Links Park in March 1999 to play in Dave Larter's testimonial match against Aberdeen. Ray is still playing football with Highland League Cove Rangers who have qualified for this season's Scottish Cup. .
